Comparing SQL Server 2005 and Oracle

SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows Server provides a platform for enterprise-class relational database and analysis solutions that outstrip Oracle 10g in security, availability, integration with Microsoft Visual Studio, and scalability from small businesses to the largest, and at lower costs.  Save with SQL Server. Because you do not have to purchase expensive add-ins to obtain benefits such as security features, management tools, and reporting and analysis services, the initial cost advantages of SQL Server 2005 over Oracle 10g carry through the entire life of the deployment.  Multicore pricing from Microsoft further increases the cost advantage of choosing SQL Server. Unlike Microsoft, Oracle has a policy of charging per core, which can make Oracle database licenses more than four times as expensive as SQL Server licenses.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Performance and Scalability - User Scalability for the Enterprise

Microsoft Dynamics™ CRM business software is designed to help enterprises achieve a 360-degree view of their customers across marketing, sales, and service. Engineered to scale efficiently to the needs of the largest global deployments, Microsoft Dynamics CRM has been tested for user scalability, data scalability, and wide area network performance. This white paper focuses on user scalability.  Microsoft, together with Unisys Corporation, completed benchmark testing of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 running on Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 operating system and Microsoft SQL Server® 2008 database software. Benchmark results demonstrate that Microsoft Dynamics CRM can scale to meet the needs of an enterprise-level, mission-critical workload of 24,000 concurrent users while maintaining performance at sub-second response times.  Test results were achieved without customizations to simulate an out-of-the-box Microsoft Dynamics CRM deployment. Standard optimization was applied using guidelines published in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Optimizing Performance toolkit. Extensive customer research formed the basis of the test design, test scenarios, database sizing, and record counts used in the testing.

Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET Books Online

Synchronization Services lets you synchronize data from disparate sources over two-tier, N-tier, and service-based architectures. Instead of only replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as portable computers and devices, that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is important for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs and gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can depend on a consistent network connection.

Large Linux Hoster Incorporates Windows Technologies, Quadruples Subscription Rate

Toronto-based Netfirms has been offering Linux-based Web-hosting services for years, but increasingly its customers—including many Web developers—were asking for additional services that the hoster could not deliver. Some customers wanted to use Microsoft® SQL Server® to power their sites; others wanted Web pages that could take advantage of Microsoft ASP.NET technologies. So Netfirms decided to roll out a Web hosting service based on Microsoft Windows Server® 2003. But rather than rolling out a parallel service offering that would force customers to maintain different accounts and separate hosting environments for their Windows and Linux-based sites, Netfirms worked closely with Microsoft to build the Netfirms MultiPlatformTM service that delivers access to both Microsoft Windows®- and Linux-based services at once. For customers, it’s the best of both worlds—and service subscription rates reflect their enthusiasm.

These documents are now common as part of insurance claims or parts of quotes. This growth in unstructured data has led Contoso to look at options for its storage, access, security, and searching needs. Join this session as we look at the FILESTREAM attribute and Remote BLOB Store API features in SQL Server 2008 as potential solutions to this problem. We cover the differences from large unstructured data storage in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and then explore the new SQL Server 2008 features in detail, while explaining how to implement them.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Simplify Management of Your SQL Server 2008 Data Platform (Level 200) Monday, March 17, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

In the next two webcasts of this series, we look at the management side of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and focus on challenges that database administrators face. See how Contoso's business in the Far East has grown rapidly, and as such, their major operations at ports in Los Angeles, Tacoma, Rotterdam, and Tilbury have grown too. This has resulted in an increase in SQL Server deployments to handle the data required to deliver up-to-date information to sales teams and customers. Contoso is looking to SQL Server 2008 to assist in the management of this environment.   We cover topics including managing complex and high-value tasks, proactively monitoring and tuning system health, scaling management to multiple data centers, and gaining insight into historical trends and real-time activities.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Simplify Management with the Declarative Management Framework (Level 200) Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Following on from the previous session, in this webcast we focus on the Declarative Management Framework (DMF) and its use to define policies that apply to servers, databases, and other objects in Contoso's data environment. This session is solely focused on DMF and covers the scope, definition, and deployment of policies.

MSDN Webcast: Map Your Data with SQL Server Spatial Features (Level 100) Monday, March 24, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Join us as we look at Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as a productive platform.  We use Container Overseas Shipping Operation (Contoso) as our scenario customer while we work our way through the features that make SQL Server 2008 this platform. Contoso is a shipping company that arranges shipping of all kinds of items around the globe, from small individual to large manufactured items. Contoso has seen growth in its business over the past years, especially in the movement of goods from China around the world. While Contoso is very happy with their in-house applications and believes they provides a significant business advantage over competitors, they want to ensure these applications are running on the most productive platform to maintain this advantage--especially as their business grows worldwide. Contoso now wants to implement a mapping feature into its systems. It sees a number of benefits to this, from assisting in pickup and delivery of consignments by providing maps to the local transports teams, in addition to providing data on consignment locations to customers, and re-routing options for agents. Join us to learn how to use spatial data types within SQL Server to create these mapping features using Microsoft Virtual Earth.

MSDN Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server: Synchronize Your Data Using the Microsoft Sync Framework (Level 100) Wednesday, March 26, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Join this series as we look at Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as a productive data platform. Throughout this series, we use Contoso (Container Overseas Shipping Operation) LTD as our scenario customer while we explore the features that make SQL Server 2008 this platform. Contoso is a shipping company; they arrange the shipping of all kinds of items around the globe, from small individual items to large manufactured items. Contoso has seen growth in its business over the past years, especially in the movement of goods from China around the world. While Contoso is happy with their in-house applications and believe they provide significant business advantage over competitors, Contoso wants to ensure that these applications are running on the best productive platform to maintain this advantage, especially as their business grows worldwide.  In this session , we look at how Contoso is empowering its mobile workforce to work and synchronize data when away from the office. Contoso has agents and employees out in the field, either delivering or collecting consignments, inspecting consignments, or visiting customers to quote jobs. These field employees use a variety of devices, from Pocket PCs to tablet PCs. To ensure that these employees have the latest information, Contoso is updating its applications to take advantage of the Microsoft Sync Framework to let these devices store data locally, run executables, and sync the data later. Join us as we cover the Sync Framework and describe how to best create these types of applications.
