SQL Server '08 Adds Dev Perks

SQL Server 2008's promised support for clear encryption could free up enterprise developers' screens for other tasks.  With the three-year-old SQL Server 2005 release, developers had to tweak their applications in order to take advantage of the database's encryption.  A new resource governor, which along with clear encryption is in the latest community technology preview (CTP), will enable developers and DBAs to prioritize important jobs over not-so-critical tasks, says Francois Ajenstat, director of SQL Server project management.

SQL Server as a Data Platform . . . Finally

In my August 2007 editorial “Too Soon for SQL Server 2008?” (InstantDoc ID 96028), I claimed that many businesses running SQL Server as their database platform wouldn’t be ready to migrate to SQL Server 2008. I still think that Microsoft’s SQL Server release schedule isn’t giving its customers time to catch up, but I have to admit that I haven’t found anything negative about the upcoming release.  In fact, SQL Server 2008 is the destination that previous SQL Server versions have been working toward.

Best Practices for Migrating Non-Unicode Data Types to Unicode

The database system in a company that is growing internationally must support multilingual characters in tables with Unicode data types. Existing databases that support only non-Unicode information must be migrated from non-Unicode data type to Unicode data type. This paper summarizes best practices for migrating database systems from non-Unicode to Unicode data type.

Database Mirroring and Log Shipping Working Together

Log shipping and database mirroring can work together to provide solutions for high availability and disaster recovery. You can convert an existing log shipping configuration to a database mirroring configuration. Although Microsoft only supports a single mirror database, you can set up log shipping from a database mirroring pair to additional servers, to provide multiple failover sites. Moreover, you can easily switch which pair of instances is using database mirroring and which instances are configured with log shipping.

Analysis Services Many-to-Many Dimensions: Query Performance Optimization Techniques

Many-to-many dimension relationships in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) enable you to easily model complex source schemas and provide great analytical capabilities. This capability frequently comes with a substantial cost in query performance due to the runtime join required by Analysis Services to resolve many-to-many queries. This best practices white paper discusses three many-to-many query performance optimization techniques, including how to implement them, and the performance testing results for each technique. It demonstrates that optimizing many-to-many relationships by compressing the common relationships between the many-to-many dimension and the data measure group, and then defining aggregations on both the data measure group and the intermediate measure group yields the best query performance. The results show dramatic improvement in the performance of many-to-many queries as the reduction in size of the intermediate measure group increases. Test results indicate that the greater the amount of compression, the greater the performance benefits—and that these benefits persist as additional fact data is added to the main fact table (and into the data measure group).

The Impact of Changing Collations and of Changing Data Types from Non-Unicode to Unicode

When a business grows internationally, its database system must support multilingual characters in tables through the use of Unicode data types. This white paper explores the amount of time that it takes to change a table column from a non-Unicode data type to a Unicode data type, along with changing the collation of the database. Use this information to calculate how long it takes to alter large tables.

White Paper: Precision Considerations for Analysis Services Users

This white paper covers accuracy and precision considerations in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. For example, it is possible to query Analysis Services with similar queries and obtain two different answers. While this appears to be a bug, it actually is due to the fact that Analysis Services caches query results and the imprecision that is associated with approximate data types. This white paper discusses how these issues manifest themselves, why they occur, and best practices to minimize their effect.

Scale-Out Querying with Analysis Services Using SAN Snapshots

This SQL Server Best Practices white paper describes the use of virtual copy SAN snapshots in a load-balanced scalable querying environment for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services to increase the number of concurrent queries to Analysis Services servers with a rapid response time per query. Load-balanced querying distributes the load of all queries among the available servers. The use of the virtual copy SAN snapshots eliminates the need to copy data between an Analysis Services processing server and one or more dedicated Analysis Services query servers. This paper supplements the Scale-Out Querying with Analysis Services white paper.

This approach reduces the potential for administrative error and enables the framework to monitor or enforce the policies in an automated fashion. Not only can policies be applied to individual databases or tables on a single server, but they can also seamlessly be scaled to include large collections of objects spanning many server instances.
