One reason might be calculation. By default Excel updates links to other documents when a recalculation occurs. This can be turned off under File &gt; Excel Options &gt; Advanced &gt; &#39;When calculating this workbook&#39; section. </p> <p>Calculation also occurs when the spreadsheet is saved.
