The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) reports that "Asian and Pacific countries continue to suffer disproportionately from disasters caused by natural hazards. Recent large-scale disasters, including the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan of March 2011, highlight the value of national preparedness for disaster". In this issue we take a closer look at the IT resources that are available for planning and the specific solutions relevant to disaster preparedness and response. We also highlight nonprofits that have successfully used IT to mitigate risk or deal with the aftermath of a disaster.

IT Planning for Disaster Preparedness & Response
Further UNESCAP research tells us that "during the past decade, on average, more than 200 million people were affected and more than 70,000 people were killed by natural disasters annually. Those figures represent 90% and 65% of the world totals, respectively". Given these statistics, there is even more of an imperative for nonprofits in the Asia Pacific region to prepare for disaster situations compared to their counterparts in other markets.
