3 weeks, 6 countries and 5k IT Pros

As part of my role as Windows 7 community manager here in Redmond, I get the chance to travel and present to IT professionals around the world. I just returned from a 10 city bus tour, time at TechEd EMEA in Berlin and speaking engagements in Copenhagen and at the Day Of Evidence in Stockholm. In total I had a chance to present or chat to almost 5,000 IT pros. So what are the top concerns that IT pros have right now?

1. Windows 2000 End of Life – For those companies still on Windows 2000 end of life comes July 2010. To better help you along, we have created a support page around the tools and resources involved in upgrading here to better help you support and manage this transition.

2. Windows 7 – Application Compatibility – There are many ways to deal with application compatibly. You can use ACT 5.5 and shim your application, you can use redesign the app, or you can upgrade to a compatible version. Other options include virtualization. Using programs like XP Mode (for small and medium sized companies under 50 users) or look at a m been managed experience for larger companies like Med-V, App-V (part of MDOP) and RDS.

3. Windows 7 Deployment – Many IT pros no done a large scale deployment in several years. There are a lot of new free tools to help manage and automate this experience. Tools like MDT 2010, and USMT have added a lot of features to help migrate your end users and their data from XP to Windows 7 easily. For videos and demonstrations visit our screencasts page or our deployment zone.

4. How do I generate excite with my end users and management? – I expect a lot of people to purchase Windows 7 laptops over the holiday season. Like most other IT pros worldwide, you have most probably already used the Beta, Release Candidate, 90 Day Enterprise Eval or have already installed the final RTM bits on your own laptop. Many of us have been using Windows 7 for almost a year now. End users are just starting to see the many exciting features that we have been using every day and would not give up. From split screen and libraries to faster boot times and ease of use, this excitement will help to build momentum for you and your deployment plans.

5. With new versions of Exchange, Server, AppV, MedV and Windows and with new versions of Office on the horizon, it is a great time to reevaluate how you have been doing business and seeing if these new products help to support your goals. Users have migrated from desktops to laptops, from working in the office to working from anywhere, anytime. They want the same user experience out of the office as in the office. Features like BranchCache, BitLocker To Go, Direct Access, Federated Search, Troubleshooters, and more help you to manager your users easier and allow for a great end user experience while reducing cost.

6. Finally, where do I start? Visit the Springboard Series on TechNet, look for more information in TechNet newsletters and connect with your peers to share your tips and tricks and hear theirs. This is an exciting time to be an IT pro. We look forward to hearing your stories and sharing those of other IT pros with you.
