This is the Windows Server Update Services support team blog. We cover all things relating to WSUS and Windows Update.
Here’s an interesting resolution I came across the other day that I thought might help some of you in case you run into the same thing.
My customer was running Windows 2003 Server and after an upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0, when they tried to approve an update in the WSUS 3.0 console it would hang and an hourglass would appear. Even after waiting for a while it was still just hung there with the hourglass.
We did some troubleshooting and after installing KB942213 it sure enough resolved the issue. This KB is titled The MMC.exe program randomly becomes unresponsive when the user clicks OK or Cancel several times to close a Windows form in Windows Server 2003 and the reason I’m mentioning it here is because the article doesn’t specifically mention WSUS so if you’re using that as a search term you may not see it.
If you run into an issue where the MMC just seems to hang for no reason then you might give this a try.

Only te mouse input hangs. Using the "menu key" (betwean te windows and the Ctrl)and you can select there your options(by keyboard). you can free your mouse again. Note. you should not have switched to other applications, then this trick wil not work any more.
The KB installed, did not require a reboot (for our system) and resolved the issue. Thank you for the fix!!!
