What inspired you to start developing?

Ever since I started to learn coding at age 13, I have been passionate about software development. When I started college, the world was moving towards mobile computing. The power of smartphones has become unimaginable. I developed an interest towards mobile app development, but I didn't know where to start and how to start. Last year, by entering Microsoft Student Partners program, I got my chance to develop apps for Windows Phone. Microsoft provides developers with extraordinary support and all the necessary tools need to develop apps. I started with no knowledge, now I have a Windows Phone app with over a million worldwide downloads in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Please tell us about your app.

I have developed one Windows Store app and four Windows Phone apps. I started with basic apps in my initial stages, then invested a few months in learning Windows Phone development deeply to develop quality applications. Then I developed an app for customizing the Windows Phone start screen. The app is "WP Themes”, it has been downloaded by over one million users in the marketplace.

Is there anything that you have had to overcome while developing? Did you ever hit a bump, what/how did you learn from it?

One thing what I mainly learned during app development was how to build a simple idea into a big app. That is the initial bump many developers faces as beginners. I too faced the same problem during my initial stages. It was a long struggle to understand the marketplace, opportunities and features which are available for a developer. It was really tough to understand all these, but once I gained some knowledge on these, it was easy to build an app idea according to user expectation and make it big.

Any advice you have for students?

I advise students to concentrate more on the application development especially for mobile and tablet devices. One thing students need to learn is dedication and commitment to the apps they develop. Be it any kind of idea, if they focus on the right target audience along with features that could make their app distinct from other apps, they can definitely achieve success. Also developing an application for billions of users with the help of Microsoft platform would be a wonderful opportunity to any student. If you can't think of what additional features would make your idea a successful app, I advise you to download all the successful app which has the same idea as your app. Make you sure you include all the features available in those apps and analyze what feature user is expecting from the app. That will give you a clear idea on how to transform your idea into a big one.

Do you participate in any other Microsoft programs (Imagine Cup, Microsoft Student Partner program, DreamSpark, etc.)?

I have participated in the Microsoft Student Partner program, and I have been an MSP since December 2012. Being an MSP I have learned a lot of skills - technical as well as non-technical. I have conducted sessions on Windows Phone app development in two colleges. I have also attended DreamSpark events conducted by Microsoft in my city.
