DVDBurn is a handly free tool that you can download from Microsoft.com - the name's pretty descriptive as it enables you to burn an ISO image onto a DVD.

Earlier today I attempted to use DVDBurn to burn the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK - a very handy free download full of Windows deployment tools) onto a DVD. I accidentally inserted a DVD+R into my laptop's drive - it can only burn DVD-R discs hence I created another coaster!

It's an easy mistake to make and hence I figured it may be useful to share the error with you just in case you do the same.

Here's a copy of the screen input and output:

D:\dvdburn d:  "WAIK vista_6000.16386.061101-2205-LRMAIK_EN.iso"
Media type: DVD+R
Preparing media...
Error reserving zone for burn

Here's a copy of the screen input and output having inserted a DVD-R:

D:\>dvdburn d:  "WAIK vista_6000.16386.061101-2205-LRMAIK_EN.iso"
Media type: DVD-R
Preparing media...
Setting DAO mode in WriteParameters mode page... Error setting timestamp; this e
rror will be ignored, some drives can work without this
- 100.0% done
Finished Writing
Waiting for drive to finalize disc (this may take up to 30 minutes).............

Success: Finalizing media took 18 seconds
Error reinserting disc

Note: The "error reinserting disc" is perfectly normal - having completed the burn the disc is ejected automatically.
