It's bad enough that the blasted spammers pollute the value of blogs and open forums by hijacking them with their nefarious comments for questionable pharmaceuticals claiming to extend particular body parts. I have recently received, only via private email so far, exhortations to explore mostly unknown security products claiming to magically eliminate a variety of security pains. (OK, I'm exaggerating. I doubt magic is involved.)
I've continued to endure the spam and have kept my comments open and unmoderated indefinitely. Fortunately, Telligent is putting some additional anti-spam measures in place. But folks, please don't use my blog to sell me or anyone else any products, ok? That's what your own web sites are for. :)
I feel your pain with the comment spam -- but you're fortunate to not be on Windows Live Spaces.
Not only do we get comment spam -- Windows Live Spaces also has a trackback feature that also receives spam! (I've nicknamed these "porkbacks" in keeping with the swine theme. (^_^)
Amen to that... I am fed up with spam.
You know what else I can't stand?
People who post a comment to your blog just so that they can link back to their own to get a few more clicks.
Yep, that's what I hate - them, and hypocrites. :)
Actually, I heard a theory a few years back (this was even before it got as bad as it is now) that the source of all spam is Dogbert. A couple years later, this even showed up in the Dilbert comic (http://www.dilbert.com) strip...!
Logically, it makes sense, and can be tolerated a tiny bit more, knowing it comes from out fearless leader (or at least can repeatedly amuse you slightly...)
Think about it... to be a spammer, you need two qualifications:
1. you have to believe that the internet is full of idiots who will believe your sales pitch and give you money in exchange for "penis enlargement pills" or whatever crap you're pushing.
2. you have to have no feelings whatsoever for the non-idiots that you do tick off.
Yup, it's Dogbert alright.

You poor naive security geek :-). As if asking the comment spammers is going to stop them!
Even sending email spammers to jail, seizing assets and generally making examples of them isn't working so a polite request has no chance with this breed of people.
They don't care about you, they don't care about your blog and worst of all they don't carry how their actions makes for an unpleasant Internet.
They are scum without scruples or morales, who just want to earn a quick buck and couldn't care less who's property they ruin in the process.
I'm sure you're not running without AV, a firewall and antispam on your computers so why are you running your blog without protection? If you're truly worried about comment spam then move to a blogging engine that can protect you without the need to put every comment into moderation.
Personally, I've been using Wordpress on my own server for years now and haven't seen a single spam comment in 18 months. There have been times in the past when the pond-scum have managed to beat the Wordpress protection and send automated trackbacks and messages but the guys involved with Wordpress seem to have them well beaten for the moment.
Get yourself a blogging engine that has a 10 pack of condoms include :-).
