During ISIT 2014, the IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory awarded its top prize to Erasure Coding in Windows Azure Storage—an associated systems paper written by Microsoft’s Cheng Huang, Huseyin Simitci, Yikang Xu, Aaron Ogus, Brad Calder, Parikshit Gopalan, Jin Li, and Sergey Yekhanin—which pointed the way to a new method for achieving more efficient storage in the cloud.

Ventyx Asset Management Now Running on Microsoft Azure
On Tuesday, Ventyx, an ABB company, announced that its asset performance software portfolio is now available in a hybrid or full-cloud model, running on Microsoft Azure.

Windows Azure renamed to Microsoft Azure
On March 25, 2014, Microsoft announced that Windows Azure will be renamed to Microsoft Azure, effective April 3, 2014.
Today, Microsoft announced that SQL Server 2014 is being released to manufacturing (RTM) and will be generally available April 1. SQL Server 2014 delivers a powerful set of capabilities for mission-critical workloads, business intelligence and hybrid cloud.

Hot on the heels of February’s release of Power BI for Office 365 - today, Microsoft released a public preview of Power BI connectivity to SAP BusinessObjects. The joint BI interoperability solution was announced and demoed during a session at the SharePoint Conference by Eron Kelly, General Manager of SQL Server Marketing at Microsoft and Jayne Landry, Global Vice President and General Manager of BI for SAP.

Microsoft Positioned as Leader in The Forrester Wave™
Forrester Research, Inc. has positioned Microsoft as a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Data Warehouse, Q4 2013. Forrester notes that leaders “offer mature, high-performance, scalable, secure, flexible, and robust EDW solutions that often combine an analytics-optimized DW with query optimization, parallel loading, deep data compression, and mixed-workload management features.”
Microsoft Joins the Open Compute Project
On Tuesday, Bill Laing, Corporate Vice President, Cloud and Enterprise announced that Microsoft is joining the Open Compute Project – a community started by Facebook that is dedicated to the open collaboration of engineering efficient hardware for cloud and high scale computing. As part of the announcement, Microsoft said it’s contributing the Microsoft cloud server specification and its datacenter blueprints that power Windows Azure, Office 365 and Bing. As part of this effort, Microsoft Open Tech also open sourced related management software.
To help organizations deliver on the demands of a modern and mobile workforce, Microsoft today announced updates to its Windows Intune service that will roll out to subscribers next week. The updates accrue to Microsoft’s overall mobile device management strategy, which is centered around people – enabling them to get access to applications and data on the devices they choose, responsibly.

As part of its effort to change the world through code, AzureDevs announced at Build 2013 that it would award $100,000 in grants to technology education nonprofits selected by the community. Over the months, tens of thousands of votes came in, and yesterday AzureDevs announced Black Girls Code (BGC) as the first place winner.
