AzureDevs Awards $100,000 to Black Girls Code

As part of its effort to change the world through code, AzureDevs announced at Build 2013 that it would award $100,000 in grants to technology education nonprofits selected by the community. Over the months, tens of thousands of votes came in, and yesterday AzureDevs announced Black Girls Code (BGC) as the first place winner. BGC will receive a $50,000 donation to continue its program, which specializes in providing young girls of color with the opportunity to learn and develop skills in computer programming and technology. BGC offers after-school programs and workshops in cities across the country to introduce coding to young girls from underrepresented communities. Through these programs, BGC arms girls with the tools they will need early on to be successful in the field of technology. Other winners were: Code.org, receiving $20,000 for its second place win, CoderDojo, Teaching Kids Programming and Code Day by StudentRND, receiving $10,000 each.

From expanding operations to further improving the quality of offerings, each organization has plans to put the grants to work reaching even more people around the globe. For more details on the winners and their programs visit the Windows Azure blog.
