Either the server files where corrupted or the vhd was lost on a power lost, what happened now you are on a panic state. You need to recover one of your primary site in your hierarchy, don’t worry we got you covered.

As is detailed on the following tech net article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712697.aspx#BKMK_DetermineRecoveryOptions

It’s very important to determine your recovery options, with this came several questions.

Are you going to recover from a backup?

If you answer was no, then here is your solution.

You can recover it from the CAS, yes the CAS host a copy of your data and its possible to send recreate your database based on the information the CAS have.

On this video I explain the process that you will need to do in order to recover your primary site.

But before I share the video let me give you a small background of what I did on my site server, after knowing there was no more option than this one. I created another virtual machine with the same Operating System, IP Address, ComputerName and disk configuration.

Installed all the pre-requirements that my primary site server need in order to install System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.

Installed SQL Server 2012 with Service Pack 1, and validate that all my pre requirements were installed.

Now let me show you how this looks like.

Check the video on Channel 9.

http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/CMPrimarySiteRecovery

Hope you enjoy the video, its around 25 minutes since I go into a little more details of troubleshooting, SQL Configuration and log files.

Santos Martinez - Premier Field Engineer – ConfigMgr and Databases

Disclaimer: The information on this site is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, confers no rights, and is not supported by the authors or Microsoft Corporation.

You can download the CU1 for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Sp1 from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817245/en-us?sd=rss&spid=1060:Description

Some of the issues that are fixed on this release:

Administrator Console

I know its hard to take the first step in writing a book, its also hard to be the first one in being published by a company. I can’t imagine what this authors tough when MS Press accept their book proposal and make them a huge success. As author I was very proud to write my first book with a lot of smart people, today I’m working on my second book and I’m happy that is with Microsoft Press.

Read more about in KimSpilker Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_press/archive/2013/03/22/nostalgia-march-22-1984-microsoft-press-introduces-its-first-two-books.aspx

Happy Reading,

Santos

SQL Server for ConfigMgr 2012, eBook and Top 10 Database Issues.

This past week I have the opportunity to speak to my peers about this topic, while speaking of it I tough my self that I will share some of these key values with my blog readers. I know how important this content can be for them, so lets sharp some extra ninja skills today and write about it. I documented the process of creating a Windows Server 2012 Fail Over Cluster and SQL Server 2012 to support my System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, a little over the counter for a blog so what I did was put all the information on a small eBook.

SQL for ConfigMgr 2012 Ebook:

http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/SQL-for-ConfigMgr-People-9aa87662

Here are my top 10 Database Issues, this are issues that I consider should be address on every ConfigMgr Database to ensure they are configured correctly.

Top 10 ConfigMgr Database issues:

This list are issue that where identified while performing a RaaS for Configuration Manager, if you want to check your current system, schedule a RaaS for CM Today. Contact me if you have any questions about it.

1. SQL Server instance has only one tempdb data file while there are more than one scheduler in use

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966534.aspx

2. Trace flags are being used.

Microsoft recommends that they be reviewed to determine whether the reason for their use is still valid. Some trace flags can have a significant effect on server performance, and often at unexpected times such as in the case of trace flags being used to capture dump files.
Trace flags can be enabled through the use of the DBCC TRACEON statement or through the use of the -T startup parameter. If the flag was enabled using the DBCC TRACEON statement, it can be turned off by using the DBCC TRACEOFF statement.

If the flag was enabled using the DBCC TRACEON statement, the command must be run again after every restart of the SQL Server service to re-enable the flag. If the flag was enabled using the -T startup parameter, the flag will automatically be re-enabled every time the server is restarted, providing that the -T parameter has not been removed.

Typically, trace flags should only be enabled in special circumstances or if you have been instructed to do so by Microsoft Service Engineers.

3. max degree of parallelism

The Microsoft SQL Server max degree of parallelism (MAXDOP) configuration option controls the number of processors that are used for the execution of a query in a parallel plan. This option determines the computing and thread resources that are used for the query plan operators that perform the work in parallel. Depending on whether SQL Server is set up on a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) computer, a non-uniform memory access (NUMA) computer, or hyperthreading-enabled processors, you have to configure the max degree of parallelism option appropriately. This article discusses the general guidelines that you can use to configure the max degree of parallelism option for SQL Server when you use the sp_configure system stored procedure

General guidelines to use to configure the MAXDOP option

4. SQL Server maximum memory allocation is unlimited

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180797.aspx

5. User Databases found that have collations different from master database

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175835.aspx

6. User database is set to compatibility level lower than the default installation level.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191137.aspx

7. DBCC CHECKDB has not been run within seven days.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms176064.aspx

8. Databases are identified with auto grow set to percentage growth.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315512

9. The Restart Period and/ or Restart Action settings for a resource is not the default setting. (Cluster Setting for Fail Over)

To change the Restart Period setting to the default value of 900000, follow these steps:

· Open Cluster Administrator.
· Right-click the resource.
· Select Properties.
· Click the Advanced tab.
· Set the Period option to 900 seconds.
· Click OK.

10. Database Indexes and Statics

Databases identified with one or more tables, with indexes that may require update statistics and Rebuild Indexes Site Maintenance task not set ConfigMgr and Maintenance Task Configuration.

Conclusion:

This are my selection of Top 10 Database issues we as ConfigMgr Administrations need to ensure wont happened, if any of this are happening to you I recommend talking to your TAM about them and schedule a RaaS for CM to confirm them. Read the information I have provided you here and you should be able to address them, if you don’t understand how to fix them also talk to your Database Administrator.

As a result of this collaboration, organizations can now benefit from the collective expertise of these two organizations and their technical communities. Organizations that have deployed or plan to deploy Microsoft Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, or Internet Explorer 10 now have guidance and tools to help maximize the security of their deployments. Consumers of Microsoft products can now confidently adopt a configuration posture that is backed by both the Center for Internet Security and Microsoft. Microsoft is providing these recommendations and guidance via a free tool, Microsoft Security Configuration Manager (SCM) that enables quick configuration and management of computers, traditional datacenter, and private cloud using Group Policy and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. The Center for Internet Security is providing the same recommendations via its free security benchmarks.

The latest version of SCM offers all the same great features as before, plus an enhanced setting library for Windows 7 SP1. SCM 3.0 provides a single location for creating, managing, analyzing, and customizing baselines to secure your environment quicker and more efficiently.

Next steps:

Download the SCM 3.0 from the Microsoft Download Center.

Help spread the word: tell your friends about Security Compliance Manager 3.0.

Thoughts?
This week I took the task to build a System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 in Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012, I will outline some of the steps I take to build my server and what are the end results.

To start I start building my virtual machine on Hyper-V, this virtual machine has 8GB of RAM, 4 Virtual Processors assigned to it and 127GB of Space on the Operating System, C: Drive and 100 to the E: Drive.

if you are looking for details on how to install Windows Server 2012 look at the following resources:

Install and Deploy Windows Server 2012

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7807.windows-server-2012-test-lab-guides.aspx

Once you have installed Windows Server 2012, you need to prepare it for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.

Prerequisites for Site System Roles on Windows Server 2012

One thing you can do when you build a server in Windows Server 2021 is that you can export the setting on the server manager, I have saved mine and will be available for you to download on the TechNet gallery.ConfigFilesSamples.zip

Now that I has configure the server, I will install SQL Server 2012 with CU3.

Download the SQL Server 2012 from your Volume License Site.

Download SQL Server 2012 CU2 from Support.

Or

Download SQL Server 2012 CU3 from Support.

I suggest that you create or add drives to the server to support your SQL Configuration and ConfigMgr, to do this we are going to create one drive for SQL Server, one drive for SQL Logs and one drive for ConfigMgr. Example: D:\ SQL Data, L:\ Logs, E:\ ConfigMgr.

When you install SQL Server, make sure to select the necessary configuration.

I uncheck the Include SQL Server Product updates, since the supported configurations don’t mention SP 1 for ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 only CU 2 that’s why I uncheck this section.

Note** if you have Firewall Enable make sure to Exclude 1433 and 4022.

For ConfigMgr I suggest select All Features with Defaults, click next after that.

Make sure you use the following Collation:

If there is another Collation selected, change it to this ones. ConfigMgr can only select the following Collation and may need to re-install it if the wrong collation is selected.

When you go to the section of Database Engine Configuration, Select Data Directories and enter the information of the drives where you going to store the data and logs.

Once you finish the SQL install and Configuration its time to apply the CU2 for SQL Server.

Configure SQL Server to ensure has the settings that ConfigMgr Needs, to do this we have to configure the max memory and min memory requirements.

Before install System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1, I suggest reading the newest published KBs to install before SP1.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2013/01/16/list-of-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-service-pack-1-kbs.aspx

One of the articles, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2801987 outlines a hotfix for Windows Server 2012. I suggest installing this hotfix to make sure you don’t ran into this issue, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2756872 or http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34943.

If you already have System Center 2012 Configuration Manager I suggest you read the process of upgrading to SP1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2801416.

Now that you have install all the hotfixes needed for your Windows Server 2012, its time to download and install Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 8.

The process of installing the Windows Assessment may take some time, I suggest to also run a Windows Update on the server to install any missing hotfix.

To validate all the components that System Center 2012 Configuration Manager has been installed, we are going to download the redistributables files or updates for ConfigMgr, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712320.aspx#BKMK_SetupDownloader. After that is complete we are going to run the ConfigMgr 2012 Pre Requisite Checker. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712320.aspx#BKMK_PrerequisiteChecker.

On the initial Check, it shows I must extend the schema of active directory if I haven’t done this for 2007, or 2012. Prepare the Windows Environment for Configuration Manager. For the System Management OU I suggest taking a look at the following PowerShell script, http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2012/01/05/creating-the-configmgr-system-management-container-with-powershell.aspx.

The other section I must install is WSUS SDK, by installing the administrative console for WSUS you should be able to continue the installation. A WSUS server will be needed for ConfigMgr 2012 so it can be able to use the Software Update Component.

Evaluate every failure that pre requisite checker tell you and validate all components has been installed, finally you will be able to validate that all components where installed correctly.

Finally all checks are passed and we are ready to install.

The installation process may take a few minutes after this is about monitoring the installation and ensure no errors occurs.

Note** This Installation may take some time.

Example of a Completed Install.

Once I finish the installation of my site I proceed to configure the basic information for it, to do this I will open the Configuration Manager Console. http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg712682.aspx.

If you are looking to build your lab for testing ConfigMgr 2012, I suggest looking at the following Hydration Kit. http://www.deploymentresearch.com/Research/tabid/62/EntryId/82/The-Hydration-Kit-for-ConfigMgr-2012-SP1-with-Windows-Server-2012-SQL-Server-2012-is-available-for-download.aspx

Thanks to Johan Arwidmark, for his hard work on the hydration kit. I personally test it and works great on my lab.

Do you have a lab of Windows Server 2012 for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager? or you already build this on Production?

Update adds support for Windows 8-based client computers in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

...read more...(read more)
