Deploying the .MSP file from a Service Manager update rollup using Configuration Manager

imageSystem Center 2012 Service Manager Service Pack 1 Update Rollup 3 not only includes general Service Manager system updates but some hotfixes for the Service Manager Console as well. Normally you would run the .exe to install the hotfix, but what if you needed to deploy this fix to multiple computers that are running the Service Manager Console using the MSP file and a software distribution tool like Configuration Manager? Fortunately that’s easy to do.

The update rollup package includes both a .MSP file and PatchWizard.exe:

AMD64

SCSM2012_AMD64_PatchWizard.exe and SCSM2012_CU_KB2750614_AMD64_7.5.1561.116.msp

I386

SCSM2012_i386_PatchWizard.exe and SCSM2012_CU_KB2750614_i386_7.5.1561.116.msp

The *Patchwizard.exe file is just a wrapper, so if you have a tool like Configuration Manager you can use the .MSP file directly for deployment and skip deploying the executable. And this applies to past and future rollups that are constructed in the same way as well. This is a fully supported scenario so if that better suites your needs then feel free to deploy the update using this method instead.

  • The link provided is for RTM Service Manager 2012 UR3 and not Service manager 2012 sp1 UR3.

That is contrary to your mentioning above.

This seems like new UR3 is released for sp1 version. Is that so ?

  • Hi,

AFAIR UR3 should be released in the next days for System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 - but right now it is not available

  • I don't think he is referring CU3. It's better to remove the word "Service Pack 1" from the blog entry to avoid confusion...

  • Running /x or /extract on the executable doesn't take effect, so there's no way to extract it without a 3rd party app. I've used 7zip and it works successfully.
