As many of you have seen over the last few years, Microsoft is embracing open source software by providing source code to some solutions and contributing software to open source community projects. The Service Manager team as part of this is open-sourcing our project code for the SendEmail Management Pack (MP) for Service Manager.
The SendEmail MP is used to allow the SCSM analyst in the console to send email notifications to other users regarding incidents. The solution leverages notification templates so that it can be configured by the administrator before you send the message what template should be used for this message. The solution also leverages the out of the box notification engine in Service Manager.
This tool is a great plug-and-play solution as is, but with the release of the source code it is also an example of the extension capabilities that Service Manager has to offer. Developers can use this project as an example of how to create code-based console tasks.
As mentioned in a blog post by Travis in April, the SendEmail feature is no longer included with the Exchange Connector package. The post also has a link from one of our System Center MVPs that created a version of SendEmail for Service Requests which is up in our TechNet Gallery.
To gain access to this tool’s source code and begin to develop your own expansion of it, you can follow this link to CodePlex where you will find the source, documentation and the recommended release of the Management Pack itself.

SendEmail is a fabulous Add-on for Service Manager and extends an already solid product with a much needed feature for large organizations. Its also great to see MS contributing to the Open Source Community. Maybe sometime soon we will see "SendEmail" do something extra cool....
