Awesome advice. This is by far the easiest and fastest route to a vhdx. My system converted the 40GB vmdk in less than 2 minutes, Hyper-V manager took 5 minutes to convert from vhd to vhdx.

Many thanks,

And it doesn't supports vSphere 5.1 hosts.

Is there any other reliable tool for converting vSphere 5.1 to Hyper-V 2012?

It took around 3 hours for the V2V conversion of a 30GB VM. What I ended up doing is the following:

1) Download the vmdks using the vSphere Client by browsing the data store

2) Convert from vmdk to vhd using StarWind V2V Image Converter

3) Convert from vhd to vhdx by using the convert-vhd cmdlet

4) Recreate the VM in Hyper-v and mount the disk

Using that procedure the same conversion takes about 20-30 minutes depending on the resources available.
