Still on vacation recovering from Spain . . . but of course I'm never really far from my master (the Internet) and so I give you some of this weeks favorites:

  1. My friend Aaron is going to start blogging again - and his posts are always full of insight and more importantly real world experience gained from being a consultant working with actual customers.  Check him out here - this blog on Vista is really good (I guarantee you'll learn something about iexplore.exe on Vista that you probably didn't know). http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2007/06/28/and-so-this-is-vista.aspx
  2. The ultimate form of Steganography - the human genome:http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/26/science/26DNA.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin  Now all we need is a good encoder . . . you can only use the letters A, G, T and C  . . . go!
  3. Love him or hate him - Jobs knows how to rally his employees . . . first he gave them all free iPod shuffles, but he's really outdone himself this time by giving them all free iPhones.  Jobs seems to 'get' something our execs don't - advertising.  He seems to instinctively know that happy, passionate employees with their free Apple gear are probably going to be showing everyone they know their new toys who in turn may go on to purchase the devices and do the same and so on and so on.  I did the same thing with my free Zune . . . oh wait - that's right - I didn't GET a free Zune.  Yeah they have roughly 1/3 the employees to feed these things to than we would - but we have 3x their market cap.  No excuses!  You can read more about Jobs's brilliant move here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/28/jobs-pulls-an-oprah-12m-in-iphones-for-all-apple-employees/
  4. Meanwhile, Microsoft Security Engineer takes #6 in the PopSci '10 Worst Jobs in Science'?  You don't say!? http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/0203101256a23110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd/5.html.  Look for me to be sporting my black "Microsoft Security Engineer: Better than sterilizing Elephants, not as good as smelling whale shit!” shirt at security conferences real soon now.

  • Dude,

I work for IBM, and I never got my free...uh...what cool stuff does IBM have that's comparable to an iPhone???   ;-)

  • 2. You're right, it really does work that way. Our group got Zunes; then my brother and daughter had to each get one, after they saw mine; then we all wanted accessories; then my neighbor saw it and wants one...
