My name is Jane Maliouta, and I am a program manager for printer and
scanner connectivity features. Today, I’d like to tell you about a new feature
available in Windows Server 2008 R2, called Distributed Scan Management (DSM).
DSM is targeted primarily for enterprises and supports network scanning
scenarios. It enables customers in enterprises to scan documents directly from
the device into their workflow (sharepoint, email, and/or fileshare). Because
DSM is part of the Windows Server, the feature is fully controllable by the
administrator, and users can have different options available to them based on
their domain profile. DSM integrates with Active Directory to enable
centralized management of the scan options available to the user.

I was wondering if there was any integration to Exchange in the sense that messages that are processed by the Scan Servers are handled as SMTP messages or are they processed into the information store with the documents being sent as the authenticated user and coming from the authenticated user mailbox and the authenticated user getting the document in their sent items?
If you want to scan documents from your multifunctional/ copier into SharePoint or mail them via Exchange, there is a solution (www.udocx.com) that authenticates users against Exchange (Office 365 or on-premise) and sends the documents as this user. The message comes from the authenticated user mailbox and the message is stored in his sent items. Because the scanned document are OCR-ed they can be used (found by search or copy/paste content) or integrated into workflows.

This service is kind of a joke.. If you look to see what's officially supported, there is only a single Ricoh device.
Agreed, no details from MS on what Mail Server is required. Or if only Exchange and what version.
Only a single device was (there are more supported devices now; though not updated at MS page where you found the single supported device list) supported because the service is new and no other vendors have developed. If you contact your device vendor, they will be able to give you a better list of supported devices.
