With one of the world’s largest developer populations, India has always been a strong driver of the global software industry and Indian developers have helped shape software trends across the world. Today, one of those fastest-growing areas is application development.

It is therefore fitting and very exciting that Bangalore is hosting what we expect will be the world’s largest Windows 8 application development festival. The Windows 8 AppFest will run for 18 hours straight, September 21 -22, and be attended by more than 3,500 talented developers and designers from many backgrounds. Setting our sights on record attendance, this is also an official Guinness World Record attempt.

At Microsoft, we have always believed in the core value of supporting innovation to help people achieve their full potential. With this aim in mind, Microsoft technical mentors and engineers will be available to help participants perfect their designs during this app development marathon. Apps will be created in 20 different categories – from food and finance to social, shopping and many more – and be prepared for eventual submission to the Windows Store.

One reason for the event’s broad appeal is that you can develop Windows Store apps in a variety of languages. For example, if you know modern web development technologies, you can develop a Windows Store app using HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets, Level 3 (CSS3), and JavaScript.

The Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 8 will be made available to developers attending the AppFest. This gives attendees early access to prepare apps and products for the Windows 8 global launch.

To join us or learn more about the event, please visit the AppFest site here. I’ll report back next week with the event results.
