Yesterday Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint 2010 was made available. SP1 contains a number of important fixes that improve the SharePoint experience for our customers. With the recommendation to install SP1 for SharePoint came a recommendation to ALSO deploy the June Cumulative Update (CU) for SharePoint simultaneously.
It’s worth explaining this recommendation in detail and answering some common questions about how / why we made this recommendation.
First, to explain the difference between SP1 and the June CU.
The recommended approach is to apply Service Pack 1 and the June CU into an environment together. Because the packages changed by the June CU supersede SP1, the order of installation isn’t critical. If you install the CU before SP1, the packages that the CU updated won’t be overwritten by SP1. Because the June CU is from a later build than SP1, many will be comfortable installing SP1 first, and then applying the CU.
A separate topic of conversation is the order in which you should apply SharePoint Foundation vs. SharePoint Server Updates. Per the guidance from the SharePoint team, when applying SP1 or the CU it is recommended to apply the Foundation packages before applying the server packages.
The recommended order of installation is as follows:
Update Foundation first: SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Foundation 2010 Language Pack June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010
Then SharePoint Server: SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 Service Pack 1 for Server Language Pack 2010 June 2011 CU for SharePoint Server 2010
You can then run the Configuration Wizard (PSConfig) one time on all boxes.

Has anyone really installed the Jun 2011 CU for Sharepoint Server 2010.
Have downloaded the CU and has not been able to extract the file
I've requested the Foundation CU from the link above, received the download email, but the link to the file contained in the email leads to a login prompt for the site siweb.microsoft.akadns.net...
This article has some slightly different advice; care to clarify?

@David, you'll see the other post has been updated to be more in line with current guidance.
The post is correct that packages are available which contain both foundation and server - casting a very different light on the ordering discussion. Eventually the guidance on TechNet and from the SharePoint team will be updated to reflect the change in packaging strategy. For now, this recommendation stands.
As of 1:24pm EDT, the June cumulative are bad. No password supplied and the files won't extract (says it's part of multi-set).
Just another typical mess from M$. Any chance you'd could one day make your products upgradeable without all this screwing around? Perhaps even test your service pack releases with clear concise documentation?
I have installed SP1 foundation + Office Server and now my Calendar Entries are not showing. Month view has entries but when you click on the day they are all missing. I even rolled back my VM and re-did the install, same thing. The AJAX calls are not bringing back events. I did the June update too and still broken.
Any ideas?
Hi All,
I have published an article describing the steps required to install and configure SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 on the existing farm with screen shots. See below URL for detail.

I cannot download the requested hotfix.
If I click the link (from hotfix server mail)
hotfixv4.microsoft.com/.../434737_intl_x64_zip.exe
the server asks for credentials for: siweb.microsoft.akadns.net .
Hi,
I've the same problem with the June CU hotfix. The site asks me redentials and in the email there's no password for extraction.
Yesterday I installed Sharepoint 2010 Server SP1 and now I can't open excel files in browser anymore. Anyone could give me some advice?
Incorrect link to 'June 2011 CU for SharePoint Foundation 2010': it points to KB2553931, while this is just one of the three hotfixes included in the actual June 2011 CU for SPF2010.
Correct June 2011 CU article is KB2536601:

The SP1 bug related to Ajax calendar and CalendarDate URL query filter:

who is this server?siweb.microsoft.akadns.net?
Can you explain why it is on my computer?
This post doesn´t talk about installing the Foundation SP on the Server ...
