During activation of Office 2010 product you may experience the following error:

Capture

If you receive this error it may be caused by missing the following reg key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=hex(7):50,00,61,00,72,00,74,00,4d,00,67,00,72,00,00,00,00,00

To automate the process of adding this reg key, run the following command on the run line:

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\CLASS\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} /v UPPERFILTERS /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d PartMgr /f

As an alternative to running the above command line you can run the Fix It solution from the following article:

Error message when you try to activate Office 2010: "An unspecified error has occurred. Your request cannot be processed at this time. (0x80070001)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2400124

After running the command line, or the fix it from KB2400124, Reboot the machine and then attempt activation again.

*Note*
There are some third party applications that may also use this key. By default in a normal Windows Xp install the PartMgr key is the only entry. Some third party imaging applications, and encryption software may also use this key, and changing this key as described above may break their functionality. Because this is the case, you may want to remove the software that placed whatever non default entry, perform the steps above, and then reinstall it.
