When Windows Server 2008 was introduced, it brought with it a number of really great features. One feature that has the potential to increase the security profile of the server is Windows Firewall with Advanced Security (referred to as the Advanced Firewall). Because the Advanced Firewall provides rules only for protocols that are needed for inbound and outbound traffic from the server, each application or service needs to provide rules to allow traffic in and out of the server for its operation. This article discusses troubleshooting the Advanced Firewall when trying to communicate with another server or service when a rule is not automatically created for it. The specific scenario that we will use shows how to diagnose and correct a rules-based problem when using Windows Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2.
