Microsoft Network Monitor is a protocol analyzer and network capturing tool. You can download the latest version for free from the Microsoft Download Center. This Blog focuses on Network Monitor 3.x. Using the Network Monitor application or NMCap (a command line utility) you can capture network traffic from multiple network interfaces simultaneously. While capturing live or viewing a previously saved capture file, you can analyze the traffic using a rich set features to filter, view, and organize frames.
A complete set of protocol parsers let you see network data with amazing detail, especially when viewing Windows protocols. The parsers also cover the most common public protocols. We update our parsers monthly on our Parser CodePlex site.
The NMAPI allows you to access the capturing and parsing engine programmatically. Documentation and examples are included in the help file which is accessible from the Help menu in the UI. The API can be used to analyze network data or write Experts which can be run from Network Monitor. Please visit our Expert page on CodePlex for a list of available experts as well as information about creating experts.
