Deploying Windows 7 Course released in 10 Languages

I’m pleased to announce that today the “Deploying Windows 7” course has been published to the MVA. This course originated in the Deployment Learning Portal (DLP). While the DLP itself has been phased out, it will continue to live within the MVA and in the 10 languages listed below.

Tomorrow we will release the component at the backend that will ensure all existing DLP registered students will be credited with the same progress level in the MVA that they achieved in the DLP. For existing DLP students who are also MVA students, all you will need to do tomorrow is log on. For those DLP students who are not yet registered with the MVA, you simply have to register and you will be credited with your course progress at that point.

We trust you will find this course useful helping you to deploy Windows 7 and this step is important as Windows XP End of Support is April 8, 2014

The September update to the Microsoft Office 365 Deployment Guide for Enterprises has been released. This guide is referenced in the Office 365 courses on the Microsoft Virtual Academy and will build on the training material in those courses.

In addition to the PDF version of the Deployment Guide, an updated web edition has been released. The web edition provides all of the same content of the document version, as well as the following:

The Microsoft Office 365 Deployment Guide for Enterprises presents important deployment planning concepts and deployment procedures. The deployment guide is organized into the sections that provide specific types of information for specific types of deployment personnel in your organization.

Deployment Overview section. This material provides the high-level look at the deployment and organizational requirements to deploy Office 365. It has valuable information for your IT decision-makers, program managers, and technical implementation leads.

Office 365 Videos Update and Reporting Other Video Issues

We have received a number of reports about the Office 365 Overview for the IT Pro video within the Office 365 Platform course. The reports indicated that the video would often not play correctly, if at all. We passed these reports onto the TechNet Edge team, who investigated the issue.

As a result of this investigation the video was modified and reloaded onto the site. We believe this update will address the issues being experienced. We hope these issues did not cause to much inconvenience in taking the Office 365 course.

As you use the Academy. if you do experience issues with videos within the courses, please let us know through the Tell The Dean address. Also to help us we request that you include the following information in you report to us:-

Which video(s) within the course you are having issues with.
A description of the problem you experience.
The Operating System Version, Browser Version and Silverlight Version you are using.
The locale are you accessing from
The Internet connection type and speed, if available

This information will help us determine the possible cause more quickly.

The Microsoft Virtual Academy team would like to announce the release of the Office 365 for the IT Pro – Lync Online, SharePoint Online & Deployment course.

Wondering how Exchange Online differs from Exchange on premises, and what it takes to migrate or coexist between the two? The Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA) has a new course that covers this new Exchange Online product and offering.

If your organization looking for new ways to collaborate then the new Lync Online and SharePoint Online offerings provide organizations with ways to collaborate using tools users are used to while benefiting from new cloud based subscriptions.

This 5 module course covers the collaborative aspects of the new Lync Online and SharePoint Online offerings. The course starts with two modules covering Lync Online Overview and configuration and then SharePoint Online Overview.

The middle two modules cover the key topics of SharePoint Online Administration, and Extensibility and Customization. IT Pros will be able to see the various aspects and roles to SharePoint Online Delegated Administration and demonstrations of the various elements of Site Collection and Site Level ownership.

When the topic of Extensibility and Customization of SharePoint comes up the initial reactions is that it’s a developer topic. The Microsoft Virtual Academy team would like to announce the release of the Office 365 for the IT Pro – Exchange Online course.

The track covers Exchange Online from an IT Pros perspective. The first modules cover an overview of the product and then the important topic of administration using the Exchange online tools of Exchange Online Control Panel, Exchange Management Console, Exchange Management Shell, and the Microsoft Online Services Portal.

A key aspect of Exchange Online is the migration and interoperability with an on-premise version. There are two modules dedicated to the subject of migrating to Exchange Online and then working in Hybrid environment.

The final module covers the important topic of Compliance and Archiving and the options available to you.

Centralizing desktops and client computers is an increasing important consideration for all IT departments as they begin to evaluate Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Using VDI to consolidate maintenance activities reduces the time which end-users must spend on OS and application deployment, configuration, patching and compliance, while decreasing hardware costs through virtualized resource pooling and sharing.

The VDI course provides a deep-dive into VDI planning and solutions as the final section in the three track program covering Microsoft Virtualization. Learn about:-

Important Change to Microsoft Virtual Academy Points System

We are making some changes to the points system you see within the Academy. The first thing to say about these changes is that no student’s current status will be downgraded by these changes.

Next point regards the Bonus Point system, Some of you will have also noticed the addition of bonus points to the courses. First of all, apologies to those people who completed a course prior to the bonus points being allocated and have not seen the bonus points added to their score as a result to that. Rest assured that this will happen during this update and all bonuses for completed course will be added to your scores.

The point system is being changed in response to feedback. Since the launch in March we have received a lot of feedback regarding the point system, as well as numerous requests to accelerate the release of new courses. In response to this we will be updating the points scale and the number of points you receive per course.

What you will see when the changes are implemented?.

No ones status will be downgraded as a result of these changes. There is also a possibility that some student may be promoted to Silver status once the bonus points are correctly added to your current score.
All current progress will stay the same, but the scale regarding how many points needed to reach a specific level will change. The new points levels will be
- Bronze: 0 – 99 points
- Silver: 100 – 499 points
- Gold: 500 – 2999 points
Rankings in the Worldwide and local Top Student lists might change as we adjust the bonus points to students who finalized a course before the Bonus Point Feature was implemented on May 5th.
Distribution of Points per content type in a course will be simplified as follows:
- Article / Whitepapers: 1 Point
- Videos: 2-3 Points (depending on length)
- Assessments: up to 5 points

The bonus points system will continue and you will be awarded bonus points every time you successfully complete all requirements for a course.

We hope you understand our reasons for simplifying the system. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on the Tell The Dean email.

As also mentioned we have had requests regarding more courses and their availability. The current schedule for the next couple of months is

June:

Microsoft Virtualization for the VMware Professional – VDI – the last of the Jump start courses will publish in June.

“Success with Private Cloud” – we are working a final name for this course, but it will contain 3 modules looking at how to be successful with Cloud computing from both a business and career perspective.

Office 365 Jump Start- We will start the publication of the 3 jump starts being delivered live during May 24-26 2011. This process will most likely spill over into July.

July:

“Microsoft High Availability Solutions” – another working title for a 5 module course looking at Clustering.

Office 2010 – The first of our Office 2010 courses will look at planning an Office deployment, covering topics such as Activation, compatibility and security.

August and beyond:

The information below is very high level and while we would really like to provide the number of courses and content details all of these courses are in the planning stages and subject to change.

Missing Bonus Points for Completed MVA Courses

We have received a lot of feedback regarding the Bonus Points that we recently added to the MVA Courses not being added retrospectively to users who have already completed those courses.

We apologise for the time it is taking to do this and we will be adding the bonus points to users that had completed the affected courses prior to this change.

We had planned to do this update this week, together with a larger change around the point scaling system. However, we have had to move this change out to the week of May 30th.

Near the time, we will publish details of the changes.
