Houston Fun Facts

Did you know, Houston’s skyline is the third tallest in North America, and one of the top 10 tallest skylines in the world?! Probably not! Perhaps there are many amazing and interesting things you don’t know about WPC’s host city for 2013, and what makes Houston so wonderful.   1. "Houston" was the first word heard from the moon on that historical day on July 20, 1969, spoken by the famous Neil Armstrong; “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”
  2. With over 8,000 restaurants in the Houston area, the average Houstonians eat out approximately 4.2 times per week, which is more than residents of any other American city.
  3. Behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States, and the largest city in the southern states. 
  4. In 2013, Houston was named one of the top 10 greenest cities in the United States by causes.com. Houston has 50,632 acres of total park space, with 22.6 acres per 1,000 residents.
  5. Houston is one of only a few American cities with resident professional companies in all four disciples of the performing arts: theatre, ballet, opera and symphony.
  6. Spanning 634 square miles, the City of Houston could contain the cities of New York, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington and Minneapolis.
  7. Houston is the birth place of the legendary pop star, Beyoncé Knowles. Beyoncé spent much of her childhood years rehearsing in her mother’s salon with a small group of girls, who would later become known as Destiny’s child.
  8. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the world largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition, first show being in 1932. In 2013, the show attracted a record high attendance of 2,506,238 people.
  9. Houston climate is considered Humid Subtropical, that almost never sees snow. Although, after a light snow-storm on December 24, 2004, the region witnessed a never-before seen white Christmas.
  10. Houston has an 11km system of tunnels and skywalks between its downtown buildings, enabling its residents and pedestrians to avoid the summer heat and rain.
