Updated Management Packs have been released with Server 2008 Support!

OpsMgr 2007 SP1 and SCE 2007 SP1 have recently announced support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 in knowledge base article 953141.  Along with the release of this support statement, the first batch of management packs that provide monitoring for the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Operating System have been released to the MP Catalog.  This batch of MPs covers the following technologies:

    ·         Windows Server Operating System

    ·         Windows Terminal Services

    ·         Windows Server 2008 Application Server

    ·         Windows Key Management Service

In addition to introducing Server 2008 support, the Windows Server Operating System MP includes the bug fixes detailed below:

    ·         Updated the logical drive discoveries to omit mapped network drives.

    ·         Addressed an issue with the Logical Disk Free Space to prevent it from looking like the thresholds were set incorrectly.

    ·         The state of the configuration of a server now reflects the state of its operating system as well.

    ·         Fixed an issue with the Server Service Configuration Health monitor which prevented it from ever generating an alert.

The same detail is provided in the MP guide, which is included in the MSI package that can be downloaded from the MP catalog.  The online versions of the MP guides will be available online soon at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540358(TechNet.10).aspx.

Note:  As described in knowledge base article 954049 you will need to install a hotfix rollup package on your OpsMgr/SCE SP1 environments to address issues on Server 2008.  Likewise, in that article under the section “Prerequisites” there is a list of four additional Windows fixes that you need to be aware and that will need to be deployed.  One of the fixes should be deployed to systems with the Operations Console installed, and the other 3 fixes are for Server 2008 systems that will be managed by OpsMgr/SCE agents.

Service Level Dashboard Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 RTM

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Service Level Dashboard Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 for download on TechNet.

IT departments need ever more sophisticated tools to monitor the performance and availability of line-of-business (LOB) applications that make the organization run. These tools need to go beyond traditional server-based monitoring where server health equals service health.

The Service Level Dashboard for System Center Operations Manager is a new Solution Accelerator that addresses the need of IT service managers for end-to-end reporting on the performance and availability of their line-of-business (LOB) applications. The accelerator provides a unique view of a business application from the user’s perspective by simulating user interactions with the business application and reporting on the experience.  Results are displayed on an easy to read dashboard, providing both top-level and detailed views. The top-level view reports the service level agreement (SLA) status (compliant or non-compliant) for every application being monitored. The detailed views reveal component-level information that can help administrators investigate the possible causes of noncompliance reported at the top level.

What other operations happen during (Push/Manual)agent install (Push/Manual)?

You want this information if you are going to use SCCM or some other product to deploy Ops Manager agents. So here is what happens in splash screen underneath (same happens in push-agent)

    1.       If MSXML 6.0 is not installed install it (You can get it from CD under msxml\<CPU arch of agent> dir)

    2.       Install Ops Manager agent

    3.       Copy helper objects Copy AD helper (OOMADS.msi) and and ASP.net (MOMAspNet.msi) from CD Image (look in CD under HelperObjects\<CPU arch of agent>) to <InstallDir>\HelperObjects dir.

Note: The helper object MSI will be run only on need basis by the corresponding Management Pack.

During upgrade we do following steps

    1.       Upgrade Ops Manager agent

    2.       Copy new helper objects as above step 3.

Audit Collection (ACS) Database and Disk Sizing Calculator for OpsMgr 2007

Recently I got some emails requesting for a ACS DB sizing calculator similar to what I had published for the OpsMgr Database and Data warehouse.  While I was unable to put one for the ACS DB I did find that a couple of months ago Pete Zerger one of the OpsMgr MVPs put together an Audit Collection (ACS) database sizing calculator. While we haven’t done an “official” verification of this tool I did get a chance to finally run some simulation tests on different workloads to compare it with what our customer have today and the sizing seems accurate. There are three different workloads this calculator takes into account which are workstations(smallest workload), member servers and domain controllers (largest workload). You can download the excel calculator from the link below.
