Michael Niehaus' Windows and Office deployment ramblings
If you are upgrading from BDD 2007 (any version) to MDT 2008, the instructions are covered in the "Getting Started Guide" included with MDT 2008. So I won't repeat that discussion here. I want to focus on the new scenario, upgrading from the original Microsoft Deployment to the new Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008. Here are the basic steps:
MDT 2008 does not require Windows AIK 1.1 if you are using only Windows Vista RTM, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003; Windows AIK 1.0 is fine for these. But if you are using Windows Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008, you need to upgrade to Windows AIK 1.1. (If you don't, as soon as you add a Windows Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008 image, you'll start seeing warning dialogs. They won't go away until you do upgrade.) The steps needed to upgrade to Windows AIK 1.1 are:
That should do it. Now you're ready to start with Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 :-)

Will XP SP3 change anything? Update to AIK or MDT?
I updated to MDT and my Distribution share as stated the Getting Started. All looked fine but the Deployment Points were missing. I had to recreate.. no big deal for me since I was just testing. FYI
MDT 2008 has been tested with pre-release versions of XP SP3. Unless something changes between now and the release of XP SP3, there should be no updates required.
Just a quick note Mike - I updated my previous distribution directory. Looked fine during the upgrade. I noticed the Deployment Points were missing. So when I recreate the DP and point to the directory, it does not create the share. I tried this few times, tried different share names just incase, and same results.
E-mail me offline at mniehaus@microsoft.com and we can see what's happening with your share.
I wonder how many different names this tool kit already had. Just some months ago, Microsoft renamed Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007 into Microsoft Deployment 4. The name of the new version, which was released today, is Microsoft Deployment Too..
When I connected to the DeploymentWorkbench and checked for updates, I got the message I needed to upgrade some required components. Under components it no longer stated AIK 1.0 was installed and 1.1 was required. I downloaded 1.1, uninstalled 1.0, installed 1.1 and the DeploymentWorkbench still said AIK 1.1 needed to be installed. Uninstalling, rebooting, installing 1.0 again, etc.... Nothing works!! Can you help me?
I upgraded to MDT 2008. That solved my problem.
