Routers, Firewalls, and VPN’s.
Issue: Win2k3 SP1 added a new RPC element called Bind Time Feature Negotiation.
This new addition to the RPC protocol may not be recognized by firewalls, routers
or VPN's. If such frames are not recognized, routers, firewalls and VPNs including
products from Checkpoint Software, Watchguard, ISA Server 2000 and ISA Server 2004
will drop the new RPC bind request frames. As a result any operation that requires
an RPC bind may now fail with RPC errors if the caller OS has W2K3 SP1 installed.
Resolution: The resolution varies depending on the product. This fixes a bunch of them
WatchGuard should not be listed in your group of firewalls that don't recognize these frames. The WatchGuard Firebox does not proxy or inspect RPC packets.
There is an old DCE-RPC proxy the Firebox administrator can add to the firewall services but its use is largely deprecated in Firebox software. WatchGuard recommends the use of simple packet filters for all VPNs.
