Daughter of the Marine Corps Commandant, self created woman, model of philanthropy, poet, lover all things that stirred the depth of human emotion, the consummate socialite and quintessential New Yorker Mrs. Astor died yesterday at her Briarcliff Manor, Holly Hill, at the age of 105.

As unpretentious as she was generous, she once said, “Money is like manure, you have to spread it around.”

Mrs. Astor, we salute you.
