We wanted to understand more about our markets in HPC and so commissioned some research to help us do just that. The goal was:

 

  • To better understand the needs of High Performance Computing experts in capital market firms Microsoft commissioned Roper Public Affairs.

Well in my cynical mind that means we asked our mothers and fathers and drew some assumptions from there - well no apparently not, this is what we did:

  • In order to reach this specialized group, an online survey was conducted
  • In total, 154 high performance computing experts were surveyed
  • The survey took place in June 2007

To save you an unnecessary download the summary was as follows:

 

  • One in five HPC experts plan to expand capacity by 1,000 nodes or more in the upcoming months
  • Performance, not price, is the most important factor when selecting an operating system application
  • The possibility of using unused desktop cycles as part of a HPC environment is strong with almost half exploring this option
  • Company size plays a major decision in the likelihood that a HPC expert is exploring using unused desktops. The larger the company, the more likely they are to be open to this idea
  • A Microsoft HPC solution is in the consideration set for most HPC experts with almost all saying they would consider a Microsoft HPC solution for their next appropriate project
