Balkan Countries Face Flooding Catastrophe

Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia as the countries struggle to cope with the worst flooding in memory. States of Emergency have been declared by Governments, tens of thousands are being evacuated from their homes. In Bosnia, flood is disturbing land mines left over from the region’s 1990s war, along with warning signs that marked the unexploded weapons.

The massive scope of the damage from flooding in the Balkans became more apparent during this week, with government officials from Bosnia-Herzegovina and neighboring Serbia describing the situation as "terrifying" and the worst disaster to strike the region since the Bosnian War 20 years ago. At least 40 people have been killed, with damage expected to rise into the billions of Euros. In some areas, floodwaters began to recede, but in others, there were still 7 to 10 feet of standing water, as rivers have carried a surge of water downstream.

Microsoft has been working with a number of key NGOs in the area, including Red Cross, to provide support: volunteering time, donations of cash, technology for emergency and recovery support services and devices.

If you would like to support this effort, here is bank account information to make cash donations to Red Cross in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia.

  • It's very cynical to do that with such amount of profits. MS should at least offer 100$ on each paid $ from us (MS users) to help those flooded regions.

  • Why did not support Bulgaria too? Here, in Bulgaria the situation is the same as in the other countries here, on the Balkans. Why you won't support Bulgaria too?

  • thanks
