UPDATE: See our most recent post on Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda
We extend our sympathies to the many people who have been impacted by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda which made landfall in the Philippines on November 8 at a high Category 5, making it the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2013. The typhoon caused significant wind and storm surge damage to communities in its path.
We would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to the many first responders on the ground helping with relief efforts. Those who wish to offer support can do so by supporting the nonprofit organizations that are providing aid to those impacted:
AIDMATRIX
A Virtual Aid Drive has been set up to help to procure items needed within the Philippines, and will help support the local economy and ensure that goods are delivered in the timeliest manner to people in need. Through this site you can direct your donation to one of the many organizations serving the communities affected by the typhoon including: CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Save the Children, World Food Programme, and more.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
The American Red Cross is deploying resources to assist the local chapters in their response and have launched an appeal for monetary donations. You can make a monetary donation here.
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS (ICRC)
For information on the safety of family and friends you can access the ICRC’s Family links.
As part of our ongoing commitment to working with local government, nonprofit and humanitarian relief partners, we will continue to assess how technology can help with relief efforts. Microsoft is also working with customers and partners to determine technology and services support needed to help with business and infrastructure challenges.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, and we will continue to provide support and information, and include updates as frequently as possible.

Not to burst anyone's bubble at Microsoft, but sometimes it seems the aid effort drives right past you. I am a retired United States Air Force Public Affairs NCO. My family and I live at Tanauan, Barangay Baras, Leyte, Republic of the Philippines -- we are one of the families at "Ground Zero" for Super Typhoon Yolanda. Everyday I watched the Catholic Relief Services people drive past us. I never saw anyone from CARE drive down the barangay road, which passes in front of my house. We lost the roof and three walls to the structure. Besides my wife, there are the kids -- a boy and two girls. A representative from Samaritan's Purse did stop and talk to my wife and took down details. When the Department Of Social Welfare Development representative was at the barangay hall, I went filled out the paperwork and answered her questions. The irony is when I handed her the paperwork, she noticed my name and country of origin. I'll never forget her response,"You're an American. We hope that you will share your blessings with us." The irony is We were hit almost as hard as our neighbors, but, it seems since I am an American, perhaps, I am not suppose to feel the discomfort. My wife heard similar remarks from neighbors. She is a Filipina. She got upset and replied, "Super Typhoon Yolanda did not stop and check for passports and visas before it struck. We got hit as hard as everyone else. It is about nine months, now, since Yolanda. The USAID tarp that we got from the US Army deployed to the Tacloban City airport is still serving as the roof. There is a local carpenter, who works on the roof as he can. We still don't have the three walls, but I'm certain Uncle Sam's military pension will help to get the concrete and blocks to build the walls. Perhaps, with future contributions to CARE, the American Red Cross, the International Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services and the other humanitarian organizations Microsoft Officials would be willing to point out that the contribution is intended to help "Everyone", regardless of their nationality, who was affected by the disaster. Yolanda's rain ruined my US Dell Windows 7 laptop; fortunately my Philippines NEO Windows 8 laptop is still working to keep us on line with the Internet and the US. Since I have used Windows 3.0, Windows Ninety Five, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, as well as Windows 7 and Windows 8, I just wanted Microsoft to be aware that the financial contributions to these organizations might not always reach the people who could use and appreciate the help. Thanks for your time. Sam The American
Please give your donations directly to the victims. Not with the help of barangay officials.
