If you want to use Virtual Server 2005 Migration Toolkit (VSMT) to migrate a computer running Windows Server 2003 SP1 to a virtual machine, you'll need to copy some system files from your installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1 to the computer running VSMT. Normally VSMT automatically swaps out certain system files in your installation for others that are compatible with virtual machine emulated hardware, but VSMT doesn't have the necessary files for Windows Server 2003 SP1. This is because VSMT was released before Windows Server 2003 SP1.
1. Copy the following files from your installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1 to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft VSMT\Patches\Source\5.2.3790\sp1\.
a. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\system32\drivers, copy the following files: atapi.sysintelide.syspciide.syspciidex.sys b. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab, copy the following file: aic78xx.sys c. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab, copy the following files: hal.dllhalacpi.dllntkrnlpa.exentoskrnl.exe
a. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\system32\drivers, copy the following files:
atapi.sysintelide.syspciide.syspciidex.sys
b. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab, copy the following file:
aic78xx.sys
c. From %SystemDrive%\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab, copy the following files:
hal.dllhalacpi.dllntkrnlpa.exentoskrnl.exe
2. Copy the following XML files from %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft VSMT\Patches\Source\5.2.3790\ to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft VSMT\Patches\Source\5.2.3790\sp1\:
finish.xmlhal.xmlhal_nacpi.xmlstart.xmlstorage.xmlstorageSCSI.xmlUNIPROC.xml

Megan, Great site, the information that you have included here has been extremely helpful. In migrating a Windows 2003 SP1 host to a virtual machine I am experiencing an error that I hope you may be able to provide some insight into. Using the VSMT, I have been able to capture and deploy an image of a Windows 2003 SP1 system. Once the image has been deployed, I try to start up the system but find that it will not boot into Windows. The Windows progress bar that usually scoots across the bottom of the screen appears and completes, but the system hangs when this progress bar reaches the right-side of the window. We have done some investigating and found that the boot hangs on the acpitabl.dat file. When this error occurs we do not have any option other than to reboot the machine. I am able to access the Windows startup menu (i.e. F8) but none of the options that are provided in this menu allow for the system to boot. Any insight as to why this error is occurring or a possible workaround is greatly appreciated. Thanks, SKM
I have seen this on both XP and 2K3....but not related to "migrating", but to storage. That is after a failure of the servers ability to access the remote fibre-channel/iSCSI attached storage, and the server will not shutdown but must me powered down, and upon rebooting it hangs at this point. I have no solution yet.
