Thank you for attending the web cast on Data Protection Manager, (DPM) as promised here is the scrubbed Q/A log (you kept Chris Avis very busy!). Also huge

re: Introduction to Data Protection Manager: Webcast (2-28-2006)

So, I have been working with DPM 2007 for awhile now, but the same issue pops up again and again.

When I schedule a recoverypoint to be made at 14:00, DPM continues synchronizing lagged syncs, but only creates a recoverypoint when all synchronizations are finished. This would create a recoverypoint from the replica at the time all syncs are finished not from 14:00h.

The algoryth should be changed to sync - sync - sync - recpoint - sync - sync ....even if there is lag. So when at 16:15 the replica has synced up to the situation of 14:00h, first create a recoverypoint before continuing syncing th rest of the lagged sync jobs.

Why is that not happening ?

I really suggest to use the Local VSS on your volumes to keep recovery-points over the day and just do 1 recoverypoint at night in DPM. Bu then you cannot use EUR for DPM, but that is not wanted in my company anyway.

re: Introduction to Data Protection Manager: Webcast (2-28-2006)

I have a server with single partion, on which I am going to install the DPM 2007 with SP1.
I am trying to erase my old tape drive to make a new backup, however i am getting error when I try to do: Mark as free, or Erase tape, I am ALWAYS getting:

The selected tape can not be marked as free because they belong to protection groups. You need to stop protection of the assotiated protection group..

And when i try directly to go: Erase tape I got about the same thing..

please helpp!!

thanks,

Firstly can you direct me to a DPM 2007 forum if this is not?

If you can help

I seem to be getting constistant errors where only half of my backup job is backed up to tape. the other half fails stating "waiting for tape free media"

Is there a way of knowing how much data is currently on the tape?

i have a backup job which is daily and a retention of one week but old jobs on the tape don't seem to be overwriiten so its confusing to know if this is happening because the tape is full or something else.

If the rention range to tape is 1 week and say the backup is done on the 10th in the view tape contents the expire date shows the 17th. Does this mean that this backup can be over written on the 17th or 18th?

If i put another tape in and click retry backup from the alert it runs. Can anyone help

many thanks

Because a dynamic volume can span up to 32 disks, if you use 1.5 terabyte disks, DPM can create replica volumes of up to 48 terabytes in size.

Great Comment, I hope this helps!
