The IT Investigators Interview Microsoft Corporate VP and CIO, Tony Scott

Keith Combs and I have a podcast show called the IT Investigators.  We like to have fun interviewing a variety of guests on wide ranging topics and this episode is no exception.  So Keith calls me one day and says he has setup and interview for us.  I asked who is it?  He calmly and simply it was going to be none other than  Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Tony Scott.   Very Cool!

The body of questions center around general information technology skills and how they are changing in various situations.  Some of the answers will surprise you. They certainly did me.

Keith and I also wondered about Tony’s time at Walt Disney Company.  I mean after all, it is the magic kingdom so I just couldn’t resist asking about casual Friday and exploring your inner self with the characters of Disney.  Tony was a good sport about it and talks about his stint as a bear.

The podcast is right at twenty four minutes and although the cell phone gods intervened right at the end, we managed to get a number of questions answered.  I think you’ll find it is a good listen.  Hope you enjoy it.

Why Microsoft + Being a Student = Awesome

If your not sure what are some of the resources, Sarah does a great job of summarizing them including:

Check out Sarah’s article, and I love her conclusion:

…Seeing all of this makes me jealous!  If I had these available to me when I was in school, I'm sure I would be in a different place.  If you are a student or know a student who'd be interested in this, definitely check out what Microsoft has to offer - it's a wide world of opportunity out there!

Outlook 2010 helps with Clean Up After Vacation

SAM_0269So last week we took the family up north to Sandusky, OH.  We went to one of the greatest roller coast parks on the planet, at Cedar Point.  Where my son rode 12 of the 16 possible coasters.  Really only 15, we heard the mean streak, was in a word mean.  AKA, not safe rough, and even chiropractors do not recommend it.  Mitchell was a beast and he road the following coasters but his favorite was the 18 seconds spent on Top Thrill Dragster:

    • Blue Streak
    • Cedar Creek Mine Ride
    • Gemini
    • Iron Dragon
    • Magnum XL-200
    • Mantis
    • Maverick
    • Millennium Force
    • Raptor
    • Wicked Twister
    • Woodstock Express (also Caitlin’s first coaster)

So what happens when I get logged on this morning, I dreaded the inevitable opening of the email.  So, after two cups of coffee,  I opened my inbox and found a little over 500 unread emails.  Which is surprisingly light, but still not a good way to start Monday.  I also I knew Outlook 2010 was here to help me and no it was not just the overuse of the delete key.   I know we all have this after vacation problem, and I know we share one thing about our email inboxes, that is normally thread upon thread of emails all related to one and another.   What do we normally do, find the top email in the thread imageand then by hand delete the rest.  Well, now there is a simpler way, In Outlook 2010, in combination with Exchange 2010, there is a new button called Clean Up.  This is a thread trimmer, and is the first button I hit when I opened my inbox.  My 500 emails became about 285, and I did not lose any data.  When you run the tool, it places all the emails it “Cleans Up” in the deleted items folder so you can still get them back up.

So next time you are on vacation let, Outlook help you clean up.

DevLink Hyper-V session Questions and Answers

I had the pleasure and speaking at DevLink in Nashville on Aug. 5th and 6th last week.  There were some good questions on Hyper-V that came up and here they are with the answers.

Q: What is a reboot need when the hardware virtualization is turned on in the BIOS?
    A:
Hardware-assisted virtualization is a virtualization approach the leverages the hardware capabilities, primarily from the host processors on the host systems. Typically, this not enabled by default, and since it is at the processor level, turning this on in the BIOS will require a hard reboot, to enable the capability.

Q: What is the overheard for the hyper-V server role?
    A:
As with any server virtualization software, there is a certain amount of overhead associated with running the virtualization code required to support guest operating systems running on Hyper-V. So it really depends on what workloads you are performing on the server, you will need to look at several factors including

    • CPU Overhead
    • Memory Overhead
    • Network Overhead
    • Disk Overhead

Q:What is the minimum requirements for the hyper-v host?
    A:
In addition to the system requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2 as described in the release notes, a 64-bit system with hardware-assisted virtualization enabled and data execution prevention (DEP) is required. It is also recommended to ensure that you have a clean install of x64 edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 to be able to use the Hyper-V technology.

Q: What happens when you put a box to sleep?
    A:
When you enable hyper-v you lost the capabilities for sleep and hibernation, here is a good post on the subject: http://blogs.technet.com/b/doxley/archive/2008/09/05/getting-some-sleep.aspx

Q: Are the virtual HD that are available from Microsoft online time bombed or how is the licensing handled?
    A:
Open evaluations for customers will enable a 30-day evaluation time period for a VHD running on Windows Server 2003 and a 60-day evaluation time period for a VHD running on Windows Server 2008.

Podcast: Episode 5 of The Tri-Athlete and the Fat Guy: Barefoot Running

This a great little video where Brian chats with my good friend Jimmy on the concept of bare foot running.  Also Jimmy was recently interviewed by the barefoot runners society (BRS).  Member Profile of the Week - Jimmy Hart, the BRS's New Marketing VP is a Little Goofy.  I would also like to congratulate Jimmy on being named the marketing VP, very cool stuff.  During the interview he talks about how overcome challenges to be a world class runner, and he even shared his thoughts about goofy:

“It’s a half on Saturday and a full on Sunday.  The atmosphere is like nothing you’ll ever experience outside of that place.  The race is challenging, and it’s just over the top fun to run through those parks with thousands of people cheering for you.  I love Disney and go to either Disney World or Disney Land every year.  Now I go to run races there, but even without those, I would probably still make the trip because it’s just too much fun.”

Good stuff Jimmy and see you in January!

Book of the Month August 2010: The Runners Rule Book

runnerHappy August, and happy running season.  With my goofy challenge training right around the corner, I thought I better learn the rules for running.  So this month, I chose The Runner's Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know--And Then Some by Mark Remy.  I really enjoyed the book, and was certainly filled with some great anecdotes about running.  The book does a great job at having fun at a sport many of us love, while still keeping it real.  However, in some sections of the book  you may have to take with a grain of salt.  I have never really ran in a race, like Mark or my good barefooting friend Jimmy, so I never got the idea of outrunning someone.  Maybe I should try, but I just like to run, enjoy the folks running with me, even the ones that pass, always make me smile. Ultimately this book will help you learn more about yourself as a runner.  The book proved to give me some insight into my own running style, and how I approach this great sport. .  Here are some of the rules I liked:

    • Rule 2.27 Run the Mile you’re in.  This is such a great rule, and I think whenever you run 3 miles or 26, just get the mile your on done, and worry about the rest.  If you get too forward thinking, you can get overwhelmed, we have all done, and what normally happens, our brain stops helping our legs run.  :-)
    • Rule 1.22 Join a Local Running Club.  Share the pain, and a great wait to keep you pace.  The main reason I blog my training schedule for Goofy, is my own accountability and in a sense if you read my blog, we are a club.  With that said, if anyone has any good running groups in Northern Cincinnati, please let me know.

The only rule, that I really did not like was this one (I understood it):

    • Rule 2.32 Do whatever it takes to finish ahead of the costumed runner

To me this had me generate a few questions, what if you are the costumed runner?  Do you take off the costume to finish?  I personally love the costume runners, and in some cases they are fun to run with, and help you smile.  Smiling while running, always seems to help!  Even if they are faster, so if you tried to do whatever it takes, you are in the wagon, on a van ride to the finish.  So still keep your pace, and enjoy the costumes.  Also those costumes do not breath really well, my hats off and admiration goes off to those guys, even if they are faster than me.

Overall if you are a runner, I highly recommend this book, and I will have to pick up Once a runner (I have never read this, but it is recommended in rule 1.19)

If you have read the book, let me know what you think.
