Jet Database Engine vs. SQL Server

I got a question on email after my Exchange seminar in Penang yesterday and I think it would be interesting for all of you. The question was “Why is Exchange Server 2007 still using the Jet Database Engine instead of SQL Server?”

When the Exchange team started developing the next version of Exchange their plan was to base it on SQL Server but they realized that it didn’t work because the SQL Server data engine wasn’t ideal for the tasks that Exchange requires. So we will still use the Jet database engine, but an enhanced version of it.

Have a nice weekend!

  • What exactly is the maximum database size in Exchange Server 2007?  I have looked all over, but I have not found the answer.

  • Mel,  the database size is limited by your hardware on both the standard and enterprise versions.
