One of my esteemed colleagues has provided some internal feedback that I would like to share with people reading this blog.

Firstly, we cannot over stress the condition that customers/partners must manage the certificates with NO room for error. The database cannot be restored or recovered without a valid certificate and thus we recommend having multiple copies of the certificate (*.CER) and private key (*.pvk) files if possible.

DATA LOSS WILL OCCUR if the certificates are lost or destroyed! Period...

Second, we encourage customers/partners to perform some stress or performance benchmark testing post TDE to establish the overall performance impact. I will attempt to provide some estimates in my next blog post for the expected duration of the TDE encryption for a sample database sizes.

Thanks for the feedback. I will be posting more DBA specific content soon, in many cases this content will apply equally to Siebel as well as SAP/JDE/Peoplesoft. I will also look at including some product specific content on the blog but if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see then please let us know.

Great article, our company is the final stages of outsourcing its Operations and Infrastructure to another provider. The datacentre will also be outsourced to the same provider.

I am that DBA who sits with the BASIS team and I'm also a Siebel Admin.

Everything in this article resonates and is so true. This biggest headache I have currently is exactly what you state i.e. poorly defined SLA's. Defining these correctly will be the acid test once the transition is complete.

I would like to see more content on Siebel. I am a Prod. DBA and have to support SAP/Siebel/Biztalk/Sharepoint systems. So providing similar info on these systems to what you already provide for SAP would be great.

Excellent article, thank you! Can you clarify one thing. As far as I can tell from the SAP documentation, SAP only supports a 2-node cluster (see page 19)

"The (A)SCS instance must be installed and configured to run on two MSCS nodes in one MSCS cluster."

Am I reading this wrong or is there newer guidance to suggest that you might be able to deploy 3 or 4 node clusters geographically dispersed? If so, can you provide pointers to that documentation on the SAP web site?

Guido,

You say "configure your SAP system to run on at least two WSFC nodes (servers)." Do you know if SAP supports more than a 2-node cluster for the SAP portion of the install? Also, what versions of SAP (if any) support more than two nodes as I can only find documentation that says they support a 2-node cluster only. We have a customer who wants to do this but are fearful that SAP will not support them. - Thanks!

Great article and learnings, can you share how many IOPS were being pushed through in this environment?

I'm facing similar issues (I'm seeing high average service times) but our symptoms are intermittent and sporadic...

Analyzing EMC WLA data shows high service times but the IOPS are sometimes rather low (and other times higher) during the high service times.
