Live Migration is CURRENTLY only supported within and among clustered Hyper-V hosts. In Windows Server 8 this will change - though there have been no announcements yet on how soon System Center 2012: VMM will support all features of Windows Server "8" hyper-V.

Another question: Why is dynamic/power optimization in SCVMM only supported for clusters? After all Live Migration works now perfectly fine outside of clusters.

Very good points, Scott. Yes, a lot depends upon the workload, and the product groups have their own support statements and recommendations for virtualization.

To follow-up on the question about the ratio of vCPUs to LPs, Microsoft does offer in various documents recommended best practices for planning for different products. The SharePoint 2010 documents recommend a 1:1 ratio whereas Exchange 2010 recommends no more than a 2:1 ratio. It would be useful to have these product-specific recommendations summarized somewhere along with some background behind the recommendation.
