  • TechEd Diary Day 4 (Last of 5) – June 10, 2010

Mardi Gras World Dear TechEd Diary,

Unlike TechEd of years past, Thursday marked the very last day of the conference.  I went to a few sessions, but the best part of the day was the all-attendee party held for us at Mardi Gras World.  Food, live music, oppressive heat (wow.. it was hot in that warehouse) and good times.

Here is my 4th and final TechEd Video Diary, which documents some of the scenes from the evening.

I hope you’ve found these enjoyable.  I know there’s not much I.T. here.  I just wanted to share some fun.

(And I also wanted to share the singing debut of my friend and teammate John Weston.  Please forgive me, John.  I couldn’t resist.)

  • TechEd Diary Day 1 – June 7, 2010

    Dear TechEd Diary,

Today was the first day of TechEd, which of course involves getting registered (unless you arrive early enough the day before to get over to registration… which I didnt’t) followed by the Opening Keynote.  Bob Mugila and a cast of several “demo monkeys” impressed us all with where Microsoft is going in several important areas such as business collaboration, online services, phones, and management.  (If you want, you can view the recording of the keynote HERE.)

I attended a few sessions, went back to my room for a power nap, and then went to the Exhibit Hall Reception.  And after the reception a few of us went out to Bourbon Street to watch more people doing Karaoke.  (Yes, I participated, but didn’t get any footage this time.)

    Enjoy the video diary:

  • TechEd Diary: Spot the Geek!

    Flying out.Dear TechEd Diary,

Here I am at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport, sitting at gate G17 awaiting my Delta flight to New Orleans.  And already I’ve seen a few other suspiciously looking geeky people at the gate.  It’s a fun little game I call “spot the geek”.

    “Really, Kevin… you’re being inconsiderate.?”

On the contrary, I mean it in the very best sense of the word.  I know there are going to be many people on this plane heading to New Orleans and TechEd North America 2010.  And I bet a few of them are just as excited as I am.  But not many.  TechEd is by far my most favoritest  (Yes, it’s a word.  It is now, anyway.) conference.  I’ve only missed TechEd ‘93, ‘96, and ‘97.  Other than that I’ve been to every one of the TechEd’s in North America; both as a customer and as an employee.  (Hint: It’s always fun, but it’s more fun being a customer.)

“So.. what are you looking forward to most this year?”

Well.. happily, and quite selfishly, I’ve been given the rare opportunity to simply attend the conference this year.  No booth duty (unless I volunteer to help someone out in a pinch), no TechEd Online video interviews as I’ve done in years past.  Just attend, learn, mingle, and ENJOY all that is TechEd.  And part of the enjoyment for me will be to do some heavy blogging about what I’ve learned and seen, who I met, and what I enjoyed while there.  I’m also going to be recording a lot of video, and compiling the results into several video diary entries.  I might even get to interview a couple of folks about what they’ve learned this week as well.

And, well, I mean… It’s New Orleans!  What’s not to love?  You may find me having a Hand Grenade at the Tropical Isle, or singing a song at the Cat’s Meow.  (C’mon up and sing with me.  I don’t mind.)

So… Watch this space!  It’s going to be a great week!

  • TechEd Diary Day 3 – June 9, 2010

Kevin Remde, Yung Chou, Evren Toktas, and John Baker Dear TechEd Diary,

It was another long day of sessions, followed by another long night of parties.  Actually, the first party was really a user group meeting disguised as a party.  My teammate and friend John Weston helped organize the first meeting for the group, and they used the fact that TechEd was in town to help promote the event and bring over some well known authors and tech-celebrities.

Following that, we went over again to the House of Blues for the “Customer and Partner Appreciation” party.  The food was great, and live music was outstanding!

Finally, as is becoming the habit, we made our way down Bourbon Street and ended up at The Cat’s Meow again.

    Enjoy the video diary!

  • TechEd Diary Day 0 – June 6, 2010

    Dear TechEd Diary,

    Here we go!

Sunday was spent traveling to New Orleans, and then spending quality time in the French Quarter with my team, Microsoft “influencers”, and good friends.

“Hey Kevin… Is that you doing Karaoke at the Cat’s Meow?”

PS – I’m working out some issues with buggy video rendering software on my PC.  I’ve only been able to render 720x480 without the software crashing.  So for now this will have to suffice.

UPDATE: Found a solution to my HD rendering problems… so here’s the high quality, extended version as hosted on TechNet Edge.

  • TechEd Diary Day 2 – June 8, 2010

    Learn! Dear TechEd Diary,

After breakfast at the hotel with some teammates (it’s nice to know someone with access to the concierge room), the morning was spent editing videos from the previous two days.  Hopefully by the time you’re reading this you’ve already enjoyed the footage and embarrassments documented therein.

This afternoon I attended some more excellent virtualization sessions.  The first one was a really good summary of what Microsoft is bringing to VDI, delivered expertly by Michael Kleef.  The second was Rand Morimoto talking about his experiences with Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2 and using System Center.  And finally I listened to Taylor Brown and Vijay Tewari talking about networking and deployment considerations for Hyper-V.

The evening found me at the Aquarium for the Microsoft Influencer party and the House of Blues for the Jam Session party.

  • Video Diary: Office 2010 / SharePoint 2010 Launch Event

As I’ve done in the past, here is a compilation of random scenes (aka “Video Diary”) of our team’s Readiness Launch event for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 that happened in Bloomington, Minnesota on May 27, 2010.

I was the presenter for the IT Pro track covering those products.  We discussed planning for, deploying, and managing the new Microsoft Office 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010.

If you’re interested in the resources:

“Kevin – Why are you doing video diaries again?”

To be honest… this one was a test.  I’m heading to New Orleans in a few hours to attend Microsoft TechEd North America, and I plan on submitting one of these for each day I’m at TechEd.  So I used this as a “re-learning” exercise.  I hope you enjoy it, and that you’ll follow my TechEd 2010 experience all this week.

“Will you be including escalators in ALL of your videos?”

    Um… we’ll see…
