RTM = Released to Manufacturing
At 1:40pm Pacific (Redmond) time, the party started around the world, as both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 finally ship; that is to say, they are “RTM’d”. The bits are ready. They’ll be sent to OEMs, then made available to partners, businesses, TechNet and MSDN subscribers, and finally throughout the world.
Congratulations to the product teams and to all of the many people who tested it, reported issues, and helped Microsoft make these into such amazing products. This is the biggest and most important new product release for Microsoft since Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
“Bigger than Microsoft Bob?”
Oh yes. And shut up.
For all the details, simply go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows. And of course the Windows 7 Team blog: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/default.aspx
For Windows Server 2008 R2, check out http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/
And the Server Division Blog: http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/
The Windows Blog has a new post today, answering the question: “When will you get Windows 7 RTM?”
“So.. when can I get it, Kevin? Has it RTM’d yet?”
Well.. it hasn’t been RTM’d (Released to Manufacturing) as of the time of writing this blog post. But the fact that these dates have been announced means that it will have to happen sometime between now (July 21st, 2009) and the first date listed.
I strongly encourage you to read the full post for all the details. But here is the summary:
“Hey! What about us IT Pros?!”
You don’t think I’d forget my people, do you?!
“And Developers? What about the MSDN subscribers?”
“And what about my mother-in-law?”
Did you pre-order it for her? If you did, then it should arrive around October 22, 2009 – which non-so-coincidentally is the day that you can also buy it in stores if you didn’t pre-order.
---
Again- make sure you check out the full post. There is additional news about the-oft-rumored-and-now-confirmed “Family Pack”, as well as an evaluation version that will be made available to IT Professionals through the Springboard Series.
Nice! Sublime Maxxus has a lengthy but enlightening post on 70 tips and tricks in Windows 7.
I don’t care who you are; you’ll likely learn something new in this post.
Sublime Maxxus: 70 Windows 7 Tips & Tricks
This is cute. I’m not eligible (as usual), but “the interns” in the Bing group at Microsoft have posted a fun video about a Jingle Contest.
“What could I win?”
Check out their video…
You have ‘til July 31st to get your video in.
This is fun.

O.M.G.T.A.F!
(Oh my gosh these are FUNNY!)
UPDATE: Shoot.. looks like this last one was just too too popular. Or perhaps just a little too over-the-top. ("gut-wrenchingly" funny!) It was pulled. Too bad.
