ws2008 r2 blog logoWhen we first made the SP1 Beta available a few weeks ago, it wasn’t particularly easy to discover and download.  It’s a little easier now.  Just head right on over to the Microsoft Download Center @ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=c3202ce6-4056-4059-8a1b-3a9b77cdfdda.

Keep in mind this beta is nearly required for the latest generation laptops running the Intel i7 proc and Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V role.

In order to download and install the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta you must currently have a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 already installed.  Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta is available for installation in English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

  • Keith, could you please explain "Keep in mind this beta is nearly required for the latest generation laptops running the Intel i7 proc and Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V role."

Is this somehwo related to: blogs.msdn.com/.../important-hotfixes-for-hyper-v-on-windows-server-2008-r2-reminder.aspx

What problems are there with i7 and has there been an announcement as far as the final availability of SP1?

  • I'm very new at this. Would my Satellite L305 S5955 work on this? What would be the difference?

  • Yea, some of the fixes rolled into the SP1 beta are the fixes Ben has listed. In my case, I have a ThinkPad W510 with the i7 Q720M. The laptop has the NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M with 1GB of video memory.

Hyper-V would not play well until SP1 was installed and the usual result was a BSOD or poor performance.

  • Thank you Keith. What about the availability, I'm shortly getting some new hardware, but am unsure as far as the availability of SP1.
