As you can see from my blog and all of the other blogs on the and areas, comments now require using the captcha codes.  This is of course to fight off the spam bots and other nefarious creatures of the web.

So what do you think? Will this have any effect on you?  Still planning to comment?  Is it just one more nuisance you don’t need?  The upside is that we are still allowing anon comments.  I moderate comments because bot or not, I still need to make sure someone isn’t posting porn links, using outrageous profanity, etc.  So I’m curious if the catcha stuff will deter you from commenting.  I worry the answer is yes.  I am hopeful the answer is no.  Thoughts?

  • This is a test comment from Keith although I am non logged in.  Therefore it's an anon submission.

  • My first technet blog comment. The codes doesn't look to intimidating.

  • This capcha isn't much of a problem. Hopefully it will discourage spammers.

  • i don't comment that much, so it won't affect me too much. i don't like it, but if it's necessary, i'll live with it. the problem with so many implementations is that they're hard to read for humans, too. as long as i can make out the characters, it isn't that big of a deal.

  • I comment on TechNet/MSDN blogs fairly often and the captcha doesn't bother me at all. It's just three digits to type so if it reduces the spam I'm all for it.

  • It's not a difficult captcha to read (in my case it was very simple) and most of us are used to it by now. I would say that I was surprised to see no audio equivalent.

  • Great!  This will undoubtedly cut a lot of automated junk out of a number of great blogs.

    I'm all for it.

  • PITA - I understand the need "to fight off the spam bots and other nefarious creatures of the web" but you already moderate - there has to be a better way...  Half the time I can't even read the darn things.

  • The captcha is just another reminder of the 10% of the population who is being a pain in the a** for the rest of us.  It doesnt bother me, i will continue to comment when appropriate, it just adds up to the overall irritation level.!

  • I've found it a huge bother. Not that inputting 3 numbers is that much of a problem, but it no longer accepts comments when I'm logged in, at least on Posting a comment whilst logged in just redirects to the blog's front page without any messages and the comment is lost. When not logged in, it does get posted.

  • I'm not a fan of captcha either, but it seems to be helping us reduce spam.
