  • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager RTM Operating System Deployment

       Hi All :

Configuration Manager provides several methods that you can use to deploy an operating system. However, regardless of the deployment method that you use, there are several actions that you must take. These actions include:

    • Identify any Windows device drivers that are required to run the boot image or the operating system image that you have to deploy.
    • Identify the boot image that you want to use to start the destination computer. Configuration Manager provides two default boot images.
    • Capture an image of the operating system that you want to deploy by using a task sequence.
    • Distribute the boot image, operating system image, and any related content to a distribution point.
    • Create a task sequence that deploys the boot image and the operating system image.
    • Deploy the task sequence to the collection that contains the destination computer. If there are multiple computers in the collection, the task sequence is deployed to each computer in the collection.

This document will to show how to capture a reference computer , and made a OS package , and then implement Bare Metal computer to install OS.

l  Windows Vista with SP2 for Management tools only installation

l  64-bit of Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise with SP2

l  64-bit of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise

    l  Windows 7

    l  Storage Groups

    l  Exchange Administrators

    l  WebDAV

    l  DAG

    l  Certificate creation

    l  Database copies

    l  Federation Trust

    l  Sharing Relationships

    l  Sharing Policies

    l  OWA Mailbox Policies

    l  Customer Experience Program properties

Many people told me Exchange Server 2007 install on Windows Server 2008 not stability and occur many error .

Today , i will share my little case of troubleshooting with you.

I setup Exchange 2007 with sp1 (x86 or x64) on Windows Server 2008 ,  when install Hub transport role phase, display Service "MSExchangeTransport" on server not reach state "Running" . in Eventlog application logs , i find Event ID 2114 , Level is Error . Description: Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGYSERVICE.EXE(PID=2776). Topology discovery failed, error 0x80040a02(DSC_E_NO_SUITABLE_CDC).

The same way to install on Windows Server 2003 you can't encounter this error . I find Windows Server 2008 TCP/IP protocol including IPv4 and IPv6 , because i haven't IPv6 topology , so i unselected TCP/IPv6 , result in this fails.

  • You Need to Know : How to configure System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager Pull-Distribution Point

       Hi All :

Beginning with Configuration Manager SP1, you can configure a distribution point that is not on a site server to be a pull-distribution point. When you deploy content to a large number of distribution points at a site, pull-distribution points can help reduce the processing load on the site server and can help to speed the transfer of the content to each distribution point. This efficiency is achieved by offloading the process of transferring the content to each distribution point from the distribution manager process on the site server. Instead, each pull-distribution point individually manages the transfer of content by downloading content from another distribution point that already has a copy of the content. A pull-distribution point can only obtain content from a distribution point that is specified as a source distribution point.

Pull-distribution points support the same configurations and functionality as typical Configuration Manager distribution points. For example, a distribution point that is configured as a pull-distribution point supports the use of multicast and PXE configurations, content validation, and on-demand content distribution. A pull-distribution point supports HTTP or HTTPS communications from clients, supports the same certificates options as other distribution points, and can be managed individually or as a member of a distribution point group. However, the following configurations are exceptions to support for the pull-distribution point:

    • A cloud-based distribution point cannot be configured as a pull-distribution point. Similarly, a cloud-based distribution point cannot be used as a source distribution point.
    • A distribution point on a site server cannot be configured as a pull-distribution point.
    • The prestage content configuration for a distribution point overrides the pull-distribution point configuration. A pull-distribution point that is configured for prestaged content waits for the content. It does not pull content from source distribution point, and, like a standard distribution point that has the prestage content configuration, does not receive content from the site server.
    • A distribution point that is configured as a pull-distribution point does not use configurations for rate limits when it transfers content. If you configure a previously installed distribution point to be a pull-distribution point, configurations for rate limits are saved, but not used. If, at a later time, you remove the pull-distribution point configuration, the rate limit configurations are implemented as previously configured.
    • A distribution point that is configured as a pull-distribution point does not use the Retry settings for content distribution. Retry Settings can be configured as part of the Software Distribution Component Properties for each site. To view or configure these properties, in the Administration workspace of the Configuration Manager console, expand Site Configuration, and then select Sites. Next, in the results pane, select a site, and then on the Home tab, select Configure Site Components, and then select Software Distribution. The following sequence of events occurs when you distribute software to a pull-distribution point:
      • As soon as content is distributed to a pull-distribution point, the Package Transfer Manager on the site server checks the site database to confirm if the content is available on a source distribution point. If it cannot confirm that the content is on a source distribution point for the pull-distribution point, it repeats the check every 20 minutes until the content is available.
      • When the Package Transfer Manager confirms that the content is available, it notifies the pull-distribution point to download the content. When the pull-distribution point receives this notification, it attempts to download the content from its source distribution points.
      • After the pull-distribution point completes the download of content, it submits this status to a management point. However, if after 60 minutes, this status is not received, the Package Transfer Manager wakes up and checks with the pull-distribution point to confirm if the pull-distribution point has downloaded the content. If the content download is in progress, the Package Transfer Manager sleeps for 60 minutes before it checks with the pull-distribution point again. This cycle continues until the pull-distribution point completes the content transfer.
    • To transfer content from a source distribution point in a remote forest, the computer that hosts the pull-distribution point must have a Configuration Manager client installed. A Network Access Account that can access the source distribution point must be configured for use.

The attached document will to show you how to installing and configure a DP being a Pull-DP.

  • FreeBSD Support on Windows Server Hyper-V

       Hi All :

With Windows Server our goal is to provide the best platform for cloud and you can see that in spades in Windows Server 2012. We’ve quietly engaging on this strategy for years. For example, Linux support on Hyper-V. Microsoft has been contributing GPL to the Linux kernel for years now and we’ve long supported Red Hat, SUSE, CentOS and the latest release of Ubuntu 12.04 (released with the last couple of weeks) even includes the Hyper-V drivers built in by default. Now, we’re taking this to the next level:

     FreeBSD support on Hyper-V.

We’ve listened to our valued customers who have told us that they’ve been successful virtualizing Windows and Linux and now want to take a look at their pockets of FreeBSD Unix and want to consolidate them on Hyper-V and better manage them via System Center. So, today, we’re announcing that we are working with our partners NetApp and Citrix to develop and extend support for FreeBSD on Hyper-V. This means that we’re developing FreeBSD drivers to enable FreeBSD to run as a first-class guest on Windows Server Hyper-V. The drivers will be fully released early this summer, including the source code for the drivers under the BSD license, and will initially work with FreeBSD 8.2 and 8.3 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and eventually on Windows Server 2012.

  • Using Windows Server 2012 VAS to activate Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

        Hi All :

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 released , I believe more and more company will begin to deployment. I think you will start to consider how to planning activation method. MAK ? KMS ? or ...

Windows Server 2012 have a new feature call Active Directory-Based Activation :

Active Directory-based Activation is a role service that allows you to use Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to store activation objects, which can further simplify the task of maintaining volume activation services for a network. With Active Directory-based Activation, no additional host server is needed, and activation requests are processed during computer startup.

Any computers running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 with a Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) that are connected to the domain will activate automatically and transparently. They will stay activated as long as they remain members of the domain and maintain periodic contact with a domain controller. Activation takes place after the licensing service starts. When this service starts, the computer running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 contacts AD DS automatically, receives the activation object, and activates without user intervention.

This document is introduce how to installing and implementing ADBA.
