  • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager RTM Application Management

         Hi All :

Application management in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager provides Configuration Manager administrative users and the users of Configuration Manager client devices with tools to manage applications in the enterprise.

The benefits of application management for administrative users include the following:

    • Applications in Configuration Manager support user-centric management that lets you associate users with devices. Instead of having to remember the name of a user’s device, you can now deploy software to the user and to the device. This functionality can help you to ensure that critical software is always available on each device that a user accesses. If a user gets a new computer, you can automatically install it with the user’s applications before the user logs on.
    • You can send application deployments to users, devices, groups of users, or groups of devices.
    • You use deployment rules to control the deployment of applications to devices. For example, you can specify that an application can only be installed on computers that have more than 2 gigabyte (GB) RAM, or that you only want the application to install on computers that run Windows 7. Any computer that does not meet your specified requirements does not attempt to install the application. Configuration Manager contains a set of built-in rules, and you can also define custom rules.
    • Users can install software directly from the Application Catalog self-service website.
    • Users can request approval to install software from a self-service website; the Application Catalog and administrative users can approve or deny those requests.
    • An administrative user can specify a deployment purpose and action for an application. This configuration controls whether the application is required or optional and whether the application must be installed or uninstalled. Configuration Manager periodically monitors the state of the deployment. For example, if an application has a deployment purpose of Required and the user uninstalls it, Configuration Manager automatically reinstalls the application.

The benefits of application management for users include the following:

    • A new client program, Software Center, provides a user-friendly interface that lets the user of a client computer perform typical tasks to help manage software that Configuration Manager installs on their devices.
    • A self-service application website, the Application Catalog, lets users search for, install, and request applications. Users that have mobile devices can also use this website to wipe their mobile devices.
    • Users can configure when software and updates must not be installed by specifying their own working hours.

How to implementing application management ? you can reference this document .

  • You Need to Know : How to use Office Web Apps Server 2013 to build Online Viewers

       Hi All :

Online Viewers enable users to use a web browser to view Excel, PowerPoint and Word files that are stored on web servers or shared folders in an organization. Users can conveniently view Office files in a web browser without having to open a separate application. In addition, Online Viewers do not require Office 2013 to be installed on users’ computers. Online Viewers also generate the code that is required to link or embed the URL inside a webpage. You can use Online Viewers within your Intranet, or on the Internet.

Office Web Apps Server provides a page at the address http://OfficeWebAppsServername/op/generate.aspx that you can use to generate links to publicly available documents that have UNC or URL addresses. When a user selects a generated URL, Online Viewers enable Office Web Apps Server to get the file from its location and then render it by using Office Web Apps. The user can view the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file in a browser with Office features intact. Formatting and layout in Word documents are preserved, data in Excel workbooks can be filtered and sorted, and animations play in PowerPoint presentations. However, be aware that Online Viewers allow users to view but not edit files, and Online Viewers can't open any files that require authentication.

This blog post neither introduce how to install a Office Web Apps Server 2013 environment nor how to configure a certificate. These part you can refer my previous blogs. I am assume you have completed these phase.

Now open the Windows PowerShell cmdlets, using Set-OfficeWebAppsFarm - OpenFromUrlEnabled to enable URL opening files. When Online Viewers are turned on (set to True by using OpenFromUrlEnabled), this parameter turns on or off the ability for Online Viewers to display files in UNC paths. By default, this parameter is set to True, but make sure OpenFromUrlEnabled is also set to True before you enable opening files from UNC paths. We recommend you set this parameter to False if you have set up Office Web Apps Server to connect to the Internet.

Then open online viewers generate website : https://<OWA's FQDN>/op/generate.aspx , enter the file UNC address and click Create Link:

Then click Test this link, will online viewing the file:

Also you can open the PDF file:

  • You need to know :

Move-CsUser -Identity "Justin Gao" -Target "LyncSrv.Contoso.msft" -Force

  • Lync Server 2013 Archiving Operation Document

       Hi All :

Archiving in Lync Server 2013 can archive the following types of content:

    • Peer-to-peer instant messages
    • Conferences (meetings) that are multi-party instant messages
    • Conference content, including uploaded content (for example, handouts) and event-related content (for example, joining, leaving, uploading sharing, and changes in visibility)

Additionally, Archiving in Lync Server 2013 provides new features that improve deployment and operations efficiency. These new features consist of:

    • Collocation of Archiving on Front End Servers.   Lync Server 2013 does not have a separate Archiving Server role. Archiving is an optional feature available on all Front End Servers in an Enterprise Edition deployment, and on Standard Edition servers, that can be implemented configured for a pool or a site.
    • Microsoft Exchange integration.   When you deploy Archiving, you can integrate data storage for Archiving with your existing Exchange 2013 storage for all users who are homed on Exchange 2013 and have their mailboxes put on In-Place Hold, so you don’t need to deploy separate SQL Server databases to archive Lync data. If you do not have an Exchange 2013 deployment, or if you prefer not to integrate with it, or if you have any Lync 2013 users who are not homed on Exchange 2013 with their mailboxes put on In-Place Hold, you can deploy separate Archiving databases by using SQL Server to store archived data from Lync communications. You can use both Microsoft Exchange integration and Lync Server 2013 Archiving databases if you want to use Microsoft Exchange integration for some but not all users in your deployment. For details about In-Place Hold, see “In-Place Hold” at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=267500.
    • SQL Store Mirroring.   When you deploy Archiving, you can enable SQL Server database mirroring for your Archiving database.
    • Archiving of Whiteboards and Polls.   Archived conference content now includes whiteboards and polls that are shared during the meeting.

The following types of content are not archived:

    • Peer-to-peer file transfers
    • Audio/video for peer-to-peer instant messages and conferences
    • Application sharing for peer-to-peer instant messages and conferences

This document I will to show how to add and enable archiving feature in existing environment.

  • What's New in ConfigMgr07 R3

    What's New in Configuration Manager 2007 R3

The following features are new and apply only to Configuration Manager 2007 R3:

    ·         Power Management. Provides a set of tools to allow the site administrator to configure standard Windows power settings across computers

    ·         Operating System Deployment Enhancements.  Prestaged Media is a way to integrate with OEM factory imaging in order to leverage imaging at the OEM to speed up new hardware deployments

    ·         Dynamic Collection Evaluation. Allows you to more rapidly evaluate a collection membership by adding only newly discovered resources.

    ·         Delta Discovery. Performs an intermediate discovery cycle adding only new resources to the Configuration Manager 2007 database.

    ·         Collections. Allows you to search for and add resources to the specified collection.

    ·         Desired Configuration Management. Allows you to easily create collection of compliant or noncompliant computers in desired configuration management.

    ·         Supported Clients Per Hierarchy: Configuration Manager 2007 R3 supports up to 300,000 clients per hierarchy when using the default settings for all Configuration Manager 2007 features. This increase in supported clients is the result of improvements to the Active Directory synchronization and Collection Evaluation processes.

About Dynamic Collection Evaluation in Configuration Manager 2007 R3

Query-based collections in Configuration Manager 2007 are periodically evaluated, based on a schedule you specify to update their membership from the site database. Even if there are no changes in the collection being evaluated, the entire collection is still processed. The default period between collection evaluations is 1 day. You can decrease this period, but evaluating collections with many members might cause a high load on your site database.

Dynamic collection evaluation in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 allows you to evaluate only resources that have been newly added to a collection. Because this improves the speed at which you can evaluate collections and lessens the processing load on the site database, you can increase the frequency by which you evaluate collections and therefore keep the data shown in the administrator console more up to date.

Important: Dynamic collection evaluation does not replace the existing method of collection evaluation; it only evaluates newly added resources

The following resources can be evaluated by dynamic collection evaluation:

    ·         Resources that have been initially discovered.

    ·         Resources that have been provisioned with operating system deployment.

    ·         Resources that have been scanned for initial hardware inventory.

    ·         Resources that have been upgraded to a newer version of the Configuration Manager 2007 client.

About Delta Discovery in Configuration Manager 2007 R3

Delta Discovery in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 enhances the discovery capabilities of the product by discovering only new or changed resources in Active Directory instead of performing a full discovery cycle. The interval by which delta discovery searches for new resources can be configured by the user to a short interval as discovering new resources only does not affect the performance of the site server as much as a full cycle. Delta discovery can detect the following new resource types:

    ·         Computer objects

    ·         User objects

    ·         Security group objects

    ·         System group objects

Important: Delta discovery is not a replacement for other Configuration Manager 2007 discovery methods. Because it only finds new or modified resources in Active Directory, it must be used in conjunction with a discovery method that performs a full synchronization with Active Directory

Note: Delta discovery only reads Active Directory attribute changes which are replicated. Non-replicated attributes which are changed such as the memberof attribute are not collected by delta discovery unless a change to a replicated attribute is made at the same time.  Delta discovery is not enabled by default in Configuration Manager 2007 R3. When enabled, it will run, by default every 5 minutes

About Prestaged Media in Configuration Manager 2007 R3

Prestaged media for Configuration Manager 2007 R3 operating system deployment contains bootable media and image files that are copied to the hard drive of a computer. Prestaged media works in conjunction with your existing task sequences to provide a complete operating system deployment. The media can be accessed locally by a task sequence to install a new operating system instead of downloading them across the network. This allows operating system deployment where the computer cannot otherwise be provisioned completely. It can also reduce network traffic when deploying operating systems while still taking advantage of task sequences.

Prestaged media is generally copied to the hard drive of a new computer as a part of the computer manufacturing process or at an enterprise staging center before the computer is sent to the end user. The prestaged media consists of a .wim file that can be prestaged on a “bare metal” computer. When the computer boots for the first time after the prestaged media has been loaded, the computer will boot to WinPE and connect to the site management point to check for available task sequences.

When creating prestaged media, ensure the boot image you are using has the appropriate network and mass storage drivers need for the system to complete the provisioning process.

About Power Management in Configuration Manager 2007 R3

The Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 power management feature provides a set of tools and resources that can help apply power settings to client computers in the enterprise and monitor the power usage of computers. Click the associated link in the following section for detailed information about planning, configuring, managing, monitoring and troubleshooting power management.

    Overview of Power Management

Power Management in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 addresses the need that many organizations have to monitor and reduce the power consumption of their computers. The feature leverages the power management features built in to Windows to apply relevant and consistent settings to computers in the organization. Different power settings can be applied during and outside of working hours. For example, it might be acceptable to apply a more restrictive power plan during non-peak hours. In cases where computers must always remain switched on, you can prevent power management settings from being applied.

There are three major components to power management in Configuration Manager 2007 R3:

    1.       Monitoring and Planning: Power Management extends the hardware inventory of Configuration Manager 2007 to collect information about computer usage and power settings for computers in the site. A number of reports are provided to allow you to analyze this data and determine optimal power management settings for computers.

    2.       Enforcement: Power management allows you to create power plans which can be applied to collections of computers in your site. These power plans configure Windows power management settings on computers. You can use the built in Windows power plans, Balanced, High Performance and Power Saver or you can configure your own custom power plans. Different power plans can be configured for peak and non-peak working hours.

    3.       Compliance: After applying power plans to computers in your organization, you can run reports to validate that power settings were correctly applied and to calculate power savings across collections of computers.

    About Reports for Power Management

Power management in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 contains a number of reports to help you to analyze power consumption and computer power settings in your organization. These reports require SQL Reporting Services which was introduced in Configuration Manager 2007 R2.

Power Management Plan Settings for Power Management

Power plans in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 contain Windows power management settings which can be configured and applied to collections of computers in your Configuration Manager 2007 R3 site.

Important: Depending on the version of Windows you are using, some settings might not be configurable on the destination client computer. For more information about the settings supported by your version of Windows, see your Windows documentation

    Prerequisites for Power Management

Power management in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 has both external dependencies and dependencies within the product.

How to Enable or Disable the Power Management Client Agent

Enabling the power management client agent in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 makes it possible for client computers in this site to apply power management plans configured in the Configuration Manager console.

The power management client agent is not enabled by default when you install Configuration Manager 2007 R3.

Important: The power management feature in Configuration Manager 2007 R3 uses data from hardware inventory on client computers to work, therefore, enabling the power management client agent will also enable the hardware inventory client agent on computers in your site. If you disable the hardware inventory client agent for your site, the power management client agent will also be disabled.  Disabling the power management client agent prevents computers in your site from applying power plans created in the Configuration Manager console.

  • System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 Bare Metal Recovery Operation Document

      Hi all :

System protection aims to protect you against two scenarios – one where your computer starts, but you have lost system files and registry; and the other where the computer does not start and you have to recover everything. System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) enables you to protect your computer against both these scenarios.

In the past, disaster recovery entailed rebuilding a computer from scratch. This meant installing the operating system, applying updates, installing applications, and then finally recovering data. This was a laborious and error-prone method. DPM saves you the time and trouble of rebuilding your system.

In DPM, System State protection consists of protecting the operating system files, and bare metal recovery (BMR) protection consists of protecting the operating system files and all data except user data on critical volumes.

DPM uses Windows Server Backup (WSB) to perform System State backup and BMR backup. For recovery, DPM will retrieve the backups and you will use the backup data to perform recovery by using WSB.

    Prerequisites

    • Windows Server Backup installed on the protected computer for BMR.
    • Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for BMR.

    Unsupported Scenarios

The following scenarios are not supported for BMR:

    • Computers running Windows Server 2003.
    • Computers running client operating systems like Windows XP or Windows Vista or Windows 7.
    • A DPM server cannot protect itself for BMR.
    • Disk-Tape protection is not supported for BMR. However, long-term to tape with short-term to disk (D-D-T) is supported.

In this document , i will show you how to using SCDPM 2010 BMR feature to recovery OS .

  • System Center 2012 Orchestrator RTM Deployment Document

       Hi All :

IT administrators perform many tasks and procedures to keep the health of their computing environment up-to-date and their business running. Tasks might include the following diverse activities, for example, new employees require that accounts and resources are configured, a business acquisition requires integrating a system from another vendor, and new hardware requires provisioning. Individual tasks and subtasks are automated, but typically, not the whole process. In addition, the administrators must maintain quality standards and system efficiency. System Center 2012 - Orchestrator can tie disparate tasks and procedures together by using the graphical user-interface Runbook Designer to create reliable, flexible, and efficient end-to-end solutions in the IT environment.

By using Orchestrator, you can carry out the following tasks:

    • Automate processes in your data center, regardless of hardware or platform.

    • Automate your IT operations and standardize best practices to improve operational efficiency.

    • Connect different systems from different vendors without having to know how to use scripting and programming languages.

    Custom automation

Orchestrator provides tools to build, test, debug, deploy, and manage automation in your environment. These automated procedures, called runbooks, can function independently or start other runbooks. The standard activities defined in every installation of Orchestrator provide a variety of monitors, tasks, and runbook controls with which you can integrate a wide range of system processes. Each activity in a runbook publishes data that is available to any subsequent activity in that runbook. You use this Published Data to provide dynamic, decision-making capabilities, which can include creating emails, alerts, log files, accounts, and more.

Your IT organization can use Orchestrator to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs to support cross-departmental objectives. Orchestrator provides an environment with shared access to common data. By using Orchestrator, you can evolve and automate key processes between groups and consolidate repetitive manual tasks. You can automate cross-functional team processes and enforce best practices for incident, change, and service management by creating runbooks that are customized for your requirements. Through automation, regularly recurring tasks reduce the number of manual and error-prone activities in your environment. Orchestrator helps you improve the reliability and predictability of your IT procedures.

    Cross-platform integration

Orchestrator integrates with System Center, other Microsoft products, and non-Microsoft products to enable interoperability across the data center. Orchestrator improves efficiency across multiple tools, systems, and departments by eliminating or crossing technology and organizational process structures. You can extend the capabilities of Orchestrator with integration packs that include additional functionality for both Microsoft and non-Microsoft products and technologies. Orchestrator activities and integration packs reduce unanticipated errors and shorten service delivery time by automating the common tasks associated with enterprise tools and products.

    End-to-end orchestration

Orchestration is the collective name for the automated arrangement, coordination, and management of systems, software, and practices. It enables the management of complex cross-domain processes. Orchestrator provides the tools for orchestration to combine software, hardware, and manual processes into a seamless system. These tools let you connect and automate workflows.

Just as manufacturing companies have automated common and repeatable tasks from their production processes, you can adopt this same efficiency in the IT environment by using Orchestrator to seamlessly perform and monitor your IT processes. Orchestrator can handle routine tasks, process enforcement, and reliably meet the demands of the largest enterprises. Orchestrator integrates seamlessly with other System Center products to integrate IT administrative tasks from start to finish.

    Extensible structure

If you have a custom in-house solution, Orchestrator provides extensible integration to any system through the Orchestrator Integration Toolkit. You can create custom integrations that allow Orchestrator to connect to any environment.

Orchestrator uses a Representational State Transfer (REST)-based web service that can perform processes like start and stop runbook jobs and get reporting information in Open Data protocol (OData) format. The web service lets you develop applications that can use live data from Orchestrator.
