Ugly Hyper-V error — Thu, 19 May 2011 01:28:05 GMT

Hi all,

We’ve been testing Hyper-V R2 SP1 Datacenter for the past 2 months and last week we experienced our first Hardware failure.

We have three servers with AMDs Magny-Core 12 cores and 64Gb of RAM on each configured on a Failover Cluster with High-Available VMs stored on an EVA 4400 with two controllers and full redundancy.

One of the nodes went down on Thursday night and some of the machines went missing on System Center Virtual Machine Manager R2 SP1.

I did a little bit of research and found out that the EVA started to load balance the LUNs across the two controllers for better performance and the machines on the affected LUN have lost their GUID.

Again more research and I found this article from Microsoft about the problem:

At 4am I’ve decided to recreate the VMs (losing all configuration) and attached the old VHDs.

My question is:

Is Microsoft really ready to take on VMware?

Is Hyper-V R2 reliable, stable and scalable as Microsoft says it is?

Why do we have to live migrate VMs to another node every month to apply patches if Microsoft says that Windows Core is the most secure platform ever built.

I hope that someone from Microsoft can answer my questions.

Mikec - KB950050 is present in Server SP2. You still need the client bits though - these are not present in Client (Vista) SP2 in-box.

Mike - KB952627 was re-released. The original download could not be installed on SP1. We re-released without the block in the installer so that it could be installed on both SP1 and SP2. If you find you still can't install after downloading the latest version, please let me know.

This is driving me NUTS - I can't install KB952627 on my Vista SP2 workstation.

Are there any workarounds for this problem?? I have the same problem as Steve. I need to get the Hyper-V remote management tools onto this workstation.

Steve - one other thing, can you also verify that KB952627 isn't already installed, just in case. That would give the same error about the update not applying.

I think we found the answer...the Vista tools will only install on Vista SP1. On a PC with SP2 applied the tools refuse to install. On SP1, the second patch refuses to install. So, the only way we can connect to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is:

1) find a PC with Vista SP1

2) install the tools

3) upgrade it to SP2

4) install the update to the tools for SP2

So far this seems to be "working;" we are at the permissions error noted in your blog.

Steve - correct in that Vista is not *supported* for managing an R2 based server, but it does work (mostly - couple of small caveats), and has nothing to do with not being able to install it. Vista is entirely supported for managing "v1" (Windows Server 2008/Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008) Hyper-V installations. Would you be able to email me the cbs.log file from \windows\logs\cbs (preferably zipped). If you use the email option at the top of this page, I'll reply then you can reply with the log. That will tell us what is going on here.

It is Vista Business. I even noticed that was in that registry that way.

A co worker watched this video, and they only mention it will work on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 so I guess Vista isn't supported any more:

That matches that the only tools I can find now are for Windows 7. I will check back later but it looks like we are down to upgrading a PC or finding a NIC that works with VMWare.

Steve - one other thing I should have verified. What SKU of Vista are you running - the update only applied to Business, Enterprise and Ultimate. (IOW, if it's a Home SKU, this is expected).
