I was setting up a new virtual machine (for playing with Windows Server 2003 R2 as it happens, but that's for another day) this morning and getting frustrated when you double-click files which have no application associated with them. On most machines, I add notepad for the list of options to "Send" a file to. Then you can right-click a file in Windows Explorer, select "Send To" and then "Notepad".
To quickly set this up: - Open Windows Explorer - Navigate to \Documents and Settings\UserName\SendTo - Right-Click and select "New Shortcut" - Notepad.exe as the program - Notepad as the name
Welcome to 1998 :) which is my way of saying I've been doing this for longer than I care to remember.
I really miss being able to do this on other peoples computers or when forced to use a locked down computer or kiosk.
An even easier way to find your "send to" folder is to right click the Start Button and choose Explore and it takes you pretty close to where you need to be.
It would be great if Windows was smarter about automatically using Notepad (or some other text editor) to open text based files that are not associated with something else already.
Love it, I love it! Simple but so helpful. One of those great tips that I wonder why I never thought of in the first place.
I've also been doing this for years, and I wish it were a default setting.
