As I’ve been travelling around spreading the love on Windows 7 I get asked a lot about some of the new shortcut  keys that are now available.  So I thought I would create a list of the most popular shortcut keys and the ones I use the most.  I’m sure there are others out there but what the heck!  The clip_image001 logo represents the Windows key on your keyboard.

Windows Shortcut Keys
clip_image001 + á Maximize Window
clip_image001 + â Restore / Minimize Windows
clip_image001 + ß Snap Window to the left
clip_image001 + à Snap Window to the right
clip_image001 + Shift + ß Jump Window to left monitor
clip_image001 + Shift + à Jump window to right monitor
clip_image001 + Home Restore / Minimize all other windows

Taskbar Shortcuts
clip_image001 + T Preview the first taskbar entry
Press again to move through taskbar entries
clip_image001 + Shift +T Preview the last taskbar entry
Press again to move back through taskbar entries.
Note: after pressing the keystroke once use left and right arrows to cycle through.
clip_image001 + # (1-9) Launches a new instance of an application in the # 1-9 slot on the taskbar

Desktop Shortcuts
clip_image001 + Space View the desktop
clip_image001 + G Bring gadgets to the top of the Z-order
clip_image001 + P Opens projection (computer only, Duplicate, Extend and Projector Only)
clip_image001 + X Mobility Center (same as Vista but useful)

Accessibility Shortcuts
clip_image001 + + Zoom in
clip_image001 + - Zoom out

Explorer Shortcuts
Alt + P Show / hide preview pane

Mouse Shortcuts
Shift clip_image002 Taskbar icon Open a new instance

clip_image002 Taskbar icon

Open a new instance
Ctrl Shift clip_image002 Taskbar Icon Open a new instance with Administrator Privileges
Shift clip_image002 Taskbar Icon Show Windows Menu
Shift clip_image002 Taskbar Group Show Window group menu
Ctrl clip_image002 Taskbar Group Cycle between the windows (or tabs) in the group

So these shortcuts are what’s new with Windows 7.  If you want to see a list of all shortcut keys in Windows Vista then check out the Windows Help site.

  • Interesting - Wingdings font renders OK in IE but not in FF (at least for me). I was wondering how WIN+á and WIN+Shift+ß etc was going to work as a shortcut until I checked the HTML source, then checked charmap to see that they are the arrow symbols in Wingdings.

btw - good seeing you again Jeff. Hopefully your next trip to Adelaide will be sooner rather than later.
