If you were at Teched Australia 2008 you would have seen many of our Virtualization technologies in action.  I for one ran all my demos on Hyper-V and found it worked very well for me.  Well today is Virtualization Launch Day in the US and kicks off a global series of "Get Virtual Now" events around the world.  In Australia we haven't announced details of these events as of yet but when we do I will post details to this blog.  So what did we announce today?  Well in a nutshell 3 things

  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server - Announced awhile back Microsoft Hyper-V Server is essentially the same as the Hyper-V included with Windows Server 2008, but Hyper-V is the only role in Microsoft Hyper-V Server.  It runs in a command prompt only and is managed remotely.  I'm going to be rebuilding my Hyper-V host with this soon.  Just wanted to let the dust settle from Teched before I venture down that road.  The main announcement is this will be free and available within the next 30 days!  Very Cool!
  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 - SCVMM 2008 will also be available in 30 days and will allow you complete management of Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008; Micorosft Hyper-V Server; Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 and VMWare ESX 3.5.
  • Live Migration - Today at the launch event we showed Live Migration for the first time and announced that it will be in Windows Server 2008 "R2".  Live migration is different to quick migration which we have today already in Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008.  Live Migration allows you to move a running virtual machine from one physical server to another with no downtime to the user.  In the launch keynote there was a video being played in a virtual machine and that machine was "live-migrated" to another physical machine with no interruption in the video playing.

There's a whole bunch of videos up on the "Get Virtual Now" pressroom and I've embedded the main keynote below for your convenience.  Please take some time to have a look if you can because there are some exciting things going on now in this space.

And to keep up with all the things that are going on make sure you subscribe to the Virtualization Feed and go the the main Get Virtual Now site to see more of the breakout sessions and details of other launch events around the world.
