I had to double-check the date before I blogged about this because it seemed like an April Fool’s joke. But it’s true – we’ve just released a free iSCSI Target Software download for Windows Server 2008 R2. Previously our iSCSI Target is something you’d only have access to after purchasing Windows Storage Server hardware, or subscribing to MSDN/TechNet and building your own Windows Storage Server. But now it looks like anyone with a license to Windows Server 2008 R2 can download, install, and use our iSCSI Target Software *in production* at no additional charge.
This announcement is great news for anyone interested in building a Live Migration-capable Hyper-V lab on the cheap. However – before you write this off as just another low-end freebie, please take a look at the scalability limits. With the proper planning and hardware this would be acceptable for light production deployments. Heck, it looks like Microsoft Support will even take calls on it.
I don’t know what else to say but… enjoy!
