The first major update for Windows 10 is now available

Today marks a momentous occasion for the Windows 10 platform. The first major update to Windows 10 is now available for PCs and tablets. This update covers user experience features, thousands of partner driver updates and many features for the enterprise across security, device management and more.

Here is a snapshot of the update from Terry Myerson’s announcement on the Windows blog.   

 

User experience updates;

  • Performance – boot time now nearly 30% faster than Windows 7 on the same device.

  • Cortana – many updates, including using your devices pen to scribble a note in the Cortana Notebook. Note: some of these features are US only for now.

  • Microsoft Edge – improved performance and security, tab previews, syncing of Favourites and Reading lists across devices and more.

  • Other improvements – to Mail, Calendar, Photos, Groove, Xbox, Store, OneNote and more!

 

Simplifying IT for Continuous Innovation   

  • Windows Update for Business – in a nutshell, this update provides greater IT controls over the deployment of updates within your organisation.

  • Windows Store for Business – a new way to find, manage and deploy applications to Windows 10 devices in a flexible manner. This applies to Windows Store apps and custom LOB apps.

 

Managing Device Options for the Modern Workplace

  • Mobile Device Management – utilise the full power of Enterprise Mobility Management to manage PCs, tablets, phones and IoT devices.

  • Azure Active Directory Join – maintain ONE directory! Your users will have one login across multiple devices and be able to roam their Windows settings and data across those devices.

 

Securing Your Organisation

  • Credential Guard – safeguarding of credentials inside a hardware-based virtualised environment.

  • Device Guard – using Trusted Boot to prevent installation of malware.

  • Windows Hello - if hardware permits, say goodbye to passwords and hello to enterprise-grade biometrics for login.

  • Windows Defender – free anti-malware service to protect approx. 300 million Windows devices daily.
