 Year in Review

The latest in a series of posts from the directors of Microsoft Research’s labs worldwide, this one from Bill Dunlap from Advanced Technology Labs Europe.

As 2011 comes to an end, we ring out the European Microsoft Innovation Center and ring in the Microsoft Research Advanced Technology Labs Europe! While the name is certainly new, our emphasis on industry engagement, collaboration with other Microsoft Research labs, and drive to deliver substantial impact to Microsoft product groups remains. Across our two focus areas of data analytics and systems assurance, we achieved great success this year.

Data Analytics
The world of event-driven applications is characterized by high data rates, continuous queries, and millisecond latency requirements that make storing data in a relational database impractical. The field of complex-event processing (CEP) focuses on handling streams of data by analyzing and correlating events in real time. Our work on CEP contributes to Microsoft StreamInsight, which offers deterministic temporal semantics, rich query semantics, and high performance.

Systems Assurance
Systems assurance is the set of tools and processes that ensure that a system functions as intended and is free of defects, either intentionally or unintentionally designed or inserted as part of the system. Systems assurance is important for enabling the next wave in cyber-physical systems for domains such as medicine, the automotive industry, and manufacturing.

Our lab also owns the technical architecture for a European Commission co-funded research project centered on building a cloud infrastructure for science, known as VENUS-C. Over the past year, the team has delivered lightweight, service-oriented middleware for the cloud in which different job-enactment services support and manage a variety of programming models.

All in all, it’s been quite a successful 2011, and we expect even more accomplishments in the new year.
